The Petition Is Up. May Nian Ning’s, Mohd Zailani’s and Pang Poon Eng’s Demise Be The Reason For Change.

The Bus Crash No More blog has been set up to collect signatures for the petition and compile news clippings of the recent incident and all the false promises by our authorities and statistics of past bus accidents.

Blogs mentioning the incident are also compiled there.

Elections are coming. So this is the best time to push this to those who can enforce the change.

We have yet to decide properly who to send it to. But as mentioned, perhaps all bus companies(especially KONSORTIUM!), the ministry of transportation, hopefully the Prime Minister(we can only try) and other associated bodies. Let as many people as possible know that us bus riders are not happy. We are SCARED.

I know most of you have linked the previous post, please LINK buscrashnomore.blogspot.com. Let’s try our best to get as many signatures as possible. We need your full name and your ic.

Don’t let Nian Ning, Mohd Zailani and Poon Eng die in vain.

Put this on forums, bulletins, emails…whatever. Just put it out there!

Help Nian Ning’s Family, Fight With Them.

Latest update at 2.17pm 30/1/2008:

THE PETITION IS UP! GO TO BUSCRASHNOMORE.BLOGSPOT.COM. Again, please tell everyone about it. Put on bulletins, forums, emails…anything. Just spread it. Ning and the others died for us to realize that this has to stop. Please help us push for safer bus rides for you, me and everyone else.

UPDATE 30/10/08: The petition is up on a proper blog but some tweaking is being done. Though the ideas below are very very good, but for fear of disappointments, we are going to appear as a solid voice of thousands to insist on a change based on the authorities’ own initiatives.

Email from Jason and co: “The demands are rather general because demands which are too ambitious might disappoint us. Hopefully they can set up a body made up of professionals to study this problem and find solutions to solve it. We give them a chance to use their own discretion to fix this problem once and for all rather than dictating to them the steps they must take (in which they will likely ignore).”

Again, watch this space, we will try to make the blog as informative as possible, as collective as possible before going public with it. Thanks guys. I wonder if Nian Ning would’ve been happy to know she is worthy of such humongous efforts and concerns. I’m sure she would have been proud. I know I would!

Update: I realize that most of us who fear for future occurrences of bus crashes are usually students. Please come up with ideas for the petition and leave it in the comments. I will try to work on it and Jason has mentioned that Ning’s friends are planning to work on it too. We’ll be in touch. Please spare a thought and think about how we can stop this once and for all. As we’re still deciding exactly how to go about this petition, please leave your email address in the comments so that when we wrap everything up, we’ll get you in on it.

Chung Lern smsed me this afternoon saying that the family will be taking action against Konsortium and he asked me to help propagate this message to the entire blogosphere. I will try my very best.

I think at this rate, all of us have pretty much given up on the government and their so called efforts to stop bus crashes from happening.

Bus crashes will continue to happen because buses, I believe, are being subbed out to subcontractors and there would be great difficulty in pinpointing who is managing all these buses. When you have so many levels of ‘management’, bribery happens and even if the authorities have nothing to do with it, it’s not easy for them to stop it.

I fear to think about what will happen this Chinese New Year season.

But I, as one person of many, believe that the bus company should take responsibility. They have not shown any remorse or taken any initiative over the incident, as reported in the papers today.

After a thorough comb through of news articles, blogs and forums, the moments before the bus landed on its side continues to haunt me.

According to the survivors, the top deck was swaying left and right as the driver was going really fast. Some passengers at the bottom deck saw the driver smsing a lot and driving really fast in the heavy rain. After awhile the passengers felt something amiss and saw the bus driver STAND UP suddenly(while the bus was moving!) and split seconds later, the passengers screamed really loudly and the bus spun three times, hit the divider and careened to the opposite highway where an oncoming MPV crashed into the back of the bus. Nian Ning and Mohd Zailani were sitting at the back row. I’m not sure about the other chinese boy who also passed away. But that’s what I’ve gathered. The passengers of the MPV only suffered minor injuries. To add insult to the injury, the bus driver only sustained a broken right leg. I’m curious to know what is happening to him now though.

A facebook group has also been set up in memory of her:

In Loving Memory of Lee Nian Neng(1987-2008).

Please post this on your blog now to help:

Chung Lern and Nian Ning’s families would like all families and friends of the victims, dead or alive, in the Slim River Bus Crash to come forward and join them in taking action against the bus company. Stand up to seek justice for these three innocent individuals, who were all so young and full of life.

If you have a blog, please call out to ANYONE who

knows someone who survived or did not survive

the crash to come forward to join the Lee family.

Make a huge difference, make a huge fuss.

For now, you may contact Lee Chung Lern at chunglern@gmail.com or preferably on his handphone at 012-6670368.

A petition will always come into good use in times like these. We’ve yet to grasp the objectives of the petition but of course it would be forwarded to the bus company, the ministry of transport(nevermind, we can still try our luck) and being a tad bit ambitious, the prime minister.

We don’t want to disturb Chung Lern and Nian Ning’s family yet, but we’re trying to understand what are our objectives if a petition should be made. Please give us your suggestions and watch this space.

I don’t want to be seen as overly nosy in the business of someone I don’t know but I feel that the demise of these innocent lives were so uncalled for. I’m feeling my friend’s pain. It could’ve been me, I can’t stress that enough. This is the most that I can do.

For all you know, it could be me, just your average young bus rider wanting to go home.

RIP: I Never Knew Her But I Can Just Imagine

Update at 12pm: read that the bus driver of the DOUBLE DECKER KONSORTIUM BUS was speeding during the downpour AND smsing at the same time. WHAT THE FUCK!!!

Updated at 5.30pm: Okay, I got the greenlight from Chung Lern. Nian Ning, you were popular, loved and admired by all. I tried to make up for the times that I will never get to ever know you by reading all those blogs with messages to you. You must’ve been one amazing girl for all the love that you’re getting from everywhere. Rest in peace.

I saw Esther’s nickname on MSN today with a message to someone to rest in peace. The name could only belong to one person and it’s mean of me to wish it wasn’t her. But it was.

Most of you would probably know by now, especially if you read the papers, but to ever hear about someone so close to someone you’re so close to passing away is absolutely devastating.

We’ve actually only ever said Hi once, and that was at Sunway Pyramid’s car park. So we were only mere acquaintances. This girl is the girlfriend of one of my closer friends from school. He absolutely adores the girl and most of our conversations in recent years usually involved her and how he was very happy with her.

I hope you don’t mind me blogging this and I will remove it if you want me to, but I’m deeply affected by it and I want you to know that I will be here for you.

I couldn’t stop falling apart with tears just thinking about how he’s probably feeling now. If I’m not mistaken, she was making a trip down to KL from her hometown in Penang via a bus.

Yes, it’s another bus crash. This part shook me up a whole lot more.

The accident happened at about 5.55pm at Slim River, the North-South Highway. The very same highway that I was driving on, at the same time, from Sungai Petani. In the papers it was mentioned that the bus driver had like multiple outstanding summonses against him and yet he was allowed to continue driving the bus up and down the highway.

But I was shaking more realizing that it could’ve been any of us who rely solely on the bus to come back. There will be some weekends where I would need to come home and would be too lazy to drive. I mean I took the bus like every other weekend for two and a half years now. Till it actually happens, I cannot for the life of me imagine how a fucking bus can actually crash. It’s so huge! Cars are widely spaced on the highway, the roads are wide enough… what idiot can’t drive decently with such conditions?!

To be able to sit here, sobbing for her, typing this, realizing that it could’ve easily been me, could’ve been me who would have to be cried for by loved ones…it’s one thing to be in shock and be upset about a friend losing a loved one, but it’s another thing to know what lies in store for you just for the sake of having to come home. It’s also seriously freaking me out that we were on the same highway at the same time. The news report mentioned a heavy downpour. It was bad, I couldn’t see the cars in front of me. It was rather unfortunate for the bus though as a little further ahead would be clear skies. That’s how it is with the stupid North South Highway, clear skies alternating with torrential downpours.

Personally, I stopped taking buses from this particular bus company and avoid it like a plaque because it takes 8 hours to get me home. 8 freaking hours. Stops at Ipoh for an hour every now and then to refuel/fix the bus.

Is the government going to do ANYTHING at all? If plane tickers were cheaper, more people would be able to utilize it. We don’t need the millions of ringgit for stupid sculptures. USE IT TO PAY YOUR FUCKING AIRPORT TAXES AND LET THE POOR PEOPLE AND STUDENTS GET ON PLANES TOO! RM30 for a plane ticket isn’t too much to ask!!

If that doesn’t work, then WHAT can there be done to stop this murderers who fetch your loved ones up and down the whole of Malaysia? IT COULD’VE BEEN ME, MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT, IT COULD’VE BEEN ME. Can YOU FUCKING HEAR ME?!! A girl my age had to die BECAUSE YOU WERE LOUSY. You were lousy in maintaining the standard of your transportations. DO SOMETHING. DO SOMETHING WE CAN FREAKING SEE!!!

SHUT DOWN THIS BUS COMPANY!! Scare the other bus companies!!

SHUT DOWN THE FUCKING BUS COMPANY FOR THEIR FAILURE IN HIRING INCOMPETENT DRIVERS!! Or does the government want to wait until one of their loved ones die from a bus crash? Try it, it hits home harder when it happens to someone around you.

I cry for my friend too who is probably in a state that I dare not even imagine him to be. I wouldn’t know what to do if I were him. I really want him to promise us that he will take care of himself.

Three deaths in a week. Heath Ledger, my classmate’s childhood friend who died from Leukemia and now her.

Though I don’t know her very well but I’ve heard so many nice things about her. I know it’s what people usually say in such circumstances but almost all my friends who have met her have given her the thumbs-up. My friend is such a nice, sweet and decent boy and to have something like that happening to him, it makes you wonder why. It makes you really wonder why. Why him? Why her? Why so early? Why so sudden?

Sudden. That’s the word. Cancers, I’ve had my fair share. But car accidents? This is a first and hopefully the last.

Suicide cases would be as shocking but you would not feel that it’s such a waste because it was ultimately the person’s choice. However, to be involved in a car accident is probably the worst way to go because you didn’t even have the chance to say goodbye. The people around you will probably never quite recover from losing you.

Deaths are always so painful to digest.

In a long stretch of time, someone you know will pass away.

There are still so many people around you today.

One by one they will go.

Seems like such a long life ahead.

p/s: rest in peace, friend-in-law. Please do not mention her name if you know who she is as I’m not sure if my friend would be happy about me blogging this. But I’m just too saddened.

Endodontology Practicals: In Need Of Molars/Jolene Vs. Green Bugs

Endodontology practicals are starting real soon! For now we’re only trying to collect an entire set of teeth for our practicals. That’s 32 teeth for each and everyone of us. It’s SUCH a headache. Everyone’s in a panic about not getting enough teeth. We’re asked to go out to dental clinics to collect teeth (note to juniors and anybody who plans to study dentistry: If you haven’t already, start collecting teeth now. You’ll be happy you have a whole jar by the time you need it.) and then mount them in plaster of paris with saw dust to resemble your jaws. The saw dust is to act as the trabeculae of the bone when you take your radiographs later on. I also don’t know what’s going on, so let me share some of that question marks with you. ???

So yeah, pre-molars are easy to get because a lot of people have them taken out before putting braces on. Tons of beautiful pre-molars. Canines are a little tricky. Strangely, anterior teeth are also easy to get. Makes me wonder about the poor people who have toothless grins now. 🙁 MOLARS! We ain’t got enough molars to go around! Anybody got grandparents or parents(we’re not that young anymore either…) who are getting dentures? Taking any teeth out? Please keep them for me? THANKS! And you can keep your wisdom tooth. Thanks but no thanks. Tons of that as well as everyone and their dog are getting their wisdom teeth taken out(and cracking super stale wisdom tooth jokes. Enoughhh.)

After getting bored of my perio notes, I decided to rearrange my teeth collection.

was using my ear digger to melt bits of the wax to stick the teeth onto the wax sheet.

Tada! Screw tidiness.

At the lab today, my tutor passed me what’s left of Alex’s teeth collection. Alex is my junior who has a whole jar of teeth that I wanted to look through to see if there are any molars. Sigh, but a few of my classmates were ahead of me in getting to the teeth. 🙁 Sorry Alex. I managed to find a few though. I owe you a SUPER huge one. 🙂 Let me know when you need help okay?

Without them molars, this means that I’d be zipping around town when I’m home to collect all the teeth I can find. Thinking of going from Subang to PJ old town to Klang(just randomly drive lah, I don’t know where I’m going also if I’m there) to Damansara(but probably just a whole bunch of premolars and nothing else from them rich suburbs) to even Bangsar. Bangsar, because I saw a government clinic near First Coach’s office.

Here’s a pitiful dental student’s plea to anyone out there, who:

i) Has a grandparent/parent who is in the midst of removing his/her teeth before getting dentures.
ii) Other dental students with teeth to spare.
iii) Bored dentists who love reading blogs about future members of the profession. Help an ally, pluck more molars! (Just kidding, just kidding. Be ethical in your work..)
iv) Teeth sellers in India and Africa. (believe me, I googled them. Cool photographs of stalls selling teeth and all.)

Pleeeasseee contact me if you have teeth sitting in a bottle. Or better! You can start collecting for me~!

We are given little rubber moulds to put our teeth into. The wax bits on the roots are to resemble periapical lesions.

Poh Yee’s finished product! Her molars will come after the CNY holidays.

YAyy, I got my tutor’s approval. All teeth are usable for our root canal therapy(endo) classes. As you can see, I’m mostly missing molars.

Sett and Ee Chean take a break from their work to pose for me.

Andy and Maxis mixing some PoP(plaster of paris) with saw dust.

Here’s Bala heating his wax sheet to get the teeth to stick on real good.

And here’s Brenda cleaning her model after removing it from the mould.

Still getting our tutor’s approval on some of our choices of teeth.

After an eternity of waiting for the moulds, I finally got an upper jaw mould. The two holes look so sad. 🙁

Saw dust for bony trabeculae. It’s amazing how they think of such things.

We’re good at this plaster of paris thing.

Upon mixing, this is the result. Looks like McFlurry Oreo, don’t you think?

Classmates huddling in various corners of the room, working together. 🙂

However, if your teeth appear sunken then you got to break the whole model into pieces and redo. Super super sien.

Zhu Zen brushing her dirty tooth.

Uncle Andy comes in on his day off to get some work sone. Hor Hor Ta Ta Yo, Andy never wear labcoat. 😛

Steven here is hard at work getting bits of PoP off the tooth surface.

L-r: Sett, Andy, Maxis and Chwan Horng.

I love Maxis’ teeth! Um, his real teeth is alright too, what with him getting braces and all. 🙂 His models occludes damn well!

Ah Thong and Chwan Horng laughing at Ah Thong’s teeth.

The silly boy applied sticky wax onto each and every tooth. We needn’t do that because it was supposed to resemble periapical lesions and was only supposed to be done on about five teeth.

And here’s mine. 🙂 So nice right? I’m so proud of it!! I remember the days when I sucked pretty badly at making models.

The other side.

I insist that you have to have a good look at my work.

A close up.

Another close up! This could go on forever.

I would then have to pose with it.

One more!

“Say what?!” – my model is SUCH a gossip queen. *rolls eyes

Oh fuckanathan!! I forgot to etch my name on the reverse side. Damn it damn it damn it.

Here’s a photo of the student centre from the study area at night. Nice eh?

You can see my classroom in this photo. 🙂

The bug problem has been resolved as I think the season is over already. However, I would love to share some tips on how I manhandled the mofos.

This was the last straw.

This is a typical night in Sungai Petani during bug season. Try driving at night and turn your high beams on. Super scary.

More for the shock factor.

The after effect. They die the next morning!

Sitting on the wall.

The thing is, these bugs don’t come out in the day. They usually enter the house at about 6pm to 7pm. I’ve been told that by turning off all the lights and closing the windows and curtains, no bugs will want to come in. Keep it that way until slightly pass midnight and you’ll be fine.

Of course, a trusty bottle of Mortein will definitely help.

However, I took it a step further by sealing all possible bug-access. The sliding door still has a small gap, small enough for the bugs to come in. Masking tape is the way to go! I spent one whole afternoon sealing the door and the windows and even my toilet window! It was worth the trouble as there weren’t any bugs that night.

Oh alright, there was one or two. But not like the usual thousands that swamp into my room and everything. These bugs are FIERCE I tell you. I could hear them tapping on the masking tape with their keratinized bodies to gain access. It was like tiny cracklings throughout the night. 🙁 So violent. The damn bugs can even find HOLES amidst the layers of masking tape AND crawl through. So scary and smart. But quite stupid also because they crawl in a little and realise “damn, this shit is sticky..” and then get stuck onto the masking tape and die.

I’m not removing the masking tapes till I graduate. How cool right? Imagine, when I pluck those masking tapes off, I would be a full fledged dentist by then! Go me!
