A couple of days ago, a friend and I were talking about blogs and how it has changed over the years. She sent me a link and said that it was her friend’s and that this chick is just one of the more popular blogger in recent times. But you can just about guess what are the reasons chicks become popular bloggers these days.

I mean I’ve seen enough blogs that become ‘famous’ just because there’s a hot girl strutting about with photos of herself plastered all over their blogs. Like 80% of the picture is of her face and her body, and maybe like a puny 20% is of the background of wherever that she is at.

I immediately clicked the ‘x’ button after scrolling through. There was NO content, only like photos of herself, a few inanimate objects around her, two or three words simply strung up to form a caption for one or two of the photos. And there you have it, a popular blog.

LIKE SERIOUSLY WTF?!

To top it off, my friend told me that this particular girl actually thought about quitting school and going on to become a full time blogger and maybe do more event stints. You know, those car modelling/umbrella girl crap. I shit you not, with two or three words for sentences, yes I’m pretty sure you’ll have a stellar blogging career.

I have no issues with beautiful women who can engage you in their blogs. With their words, not with their boobs and big eyes combo. It makes you envy these women because they have the best of both worlds but when there’s no substance in your blog only photos of yourself knowing clearly well that you’re sizzling, and THEN have the audacity to consider a career in blogging full time, ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?! If you finish school already and don’t quite know what to do yet also not too bad lah. But are you mad ah? If your writing isn’t even good enough for a magazine to take you on as part of their contributors’ column, please just get your degree/diploma first. Don’t embarrass us womenkind with your mentality. Once you graduate and bum around, you’ll have all the time to earn those moolah, go for events and maybe read some books (if too difficult, maybe magazines also can) so you’ll learn how to structure proper sentences. At least then your blog entries are whole, you know? Not just smatterings of words and emoticons.

It boggles the mind that there are such bimbos around. While we’re on the topic of bimbos, are girls who work for car shows, alcohol and tobacco products actually proud of their jobs? I mean I’m all for baring skin if you have what it takes lah but to be paid to bare most of your some skin while selling things? Right, I won’t pick on those damn kesian girls who have to feed their mother, father, sister, brother, dog at home. Money is hard to come by, I get it. Any job that comes along, you’re hot, you take it. A bit of skin for food on the table, degrading but what can you do.

But what about those college girls at private institutions who just want that extra cash to go on shopping trips? Damn low la please. I’ll give my daughter two tight slaps if she dares to take on such jobs.

Oh right, back to little girls who can’t write and want to be full time bloggers.

As we know, there are a few full time bloggers around but these are people who have made such a name for themselves that they are practically a brand in their own right. They are involved in huge projects and… well, people actually know who they are. You know, like they have audiences that actually consist of females and males. Not just very friendly boys.

No doubt about the fact that full time bloggers do get paid rather well, which is why these little girls aspire to be full time bloggers too. Of course success stories can be repeated because OnE SHoULd DaRE To DreAm RighT?! Bloggers who manage to carve a name for themselves and thus are deemed popular are usually of the intelligent sort. If they have not already completed some form of education, they are most likely to currently be pursuing one. They have ambitions like normal people.

Quitting school to blog full time is just plain dumb.

Now that I have some time to breathe…here’s the Nuffnang Asia Pacific Blog Awards 2009 post before I blog about my million and one other stuffs.

I’ve been on the plane on my own a lot this year. My virgin solo flight was in Feburary 2009 to surprise Chee Kiang for Valentine’s day and I even flew to Thailand on my own last weekend. My first time in Bangkok! SHOPPING MADNESS. Promise you, it’ll be the blog post after this. Not a big deal to you jetsetters but I’ve always regarded airports and flights as a family thing, a big hoo hah when a bunch of friends plan a holiday months in advance.

Coming out from my car at the Penang International Airport’s carpark. I’ve been googling for years regarding buses or simpler modes of transportation from Sg. Petani to Penang airport but to no avail. A freaking cab costs RM90 from Sungai Petani to the airport and that’s only one way! If you drive, the toll only costs about RM12 or so. I can’t really remember. But get this – if you leave your car at the carpark for 24 hours, it’s RM20! So if I leave my car at the airport over the weekend, say Friday night, Saturday night and I return on Sunday, my total will be about less than RM70? Which is tons cheaper than RM180 for your cab ride to and fro Sg. Petani. Still pricey. :X

Hate doing aeroplane maths. Return flights + parking cheaper than driving home (RM50 petrol, RM50+ toll one way) or what? Sigh. Anyway, moving on. This is not a post about my travel expenses.

Felt quite proud of myself as I managed to hop on to the MRT from Changi Airport and actually walked from the Outram MRT Station to Link Hotel. I is not a pampered girl! Yayz! (Actually because no money to flag down a cab). Link Hotel was previously a row of HDB apartments which have since been converted into a boutique hotel. The rooms there come in four themes – chinese, malay, indian and modern. I think mine was chinese.

For the Nuffnang Asia Pacific Blog Awards, all foreign bloggers (Malaysia, Phillipines and Australia) were put up at Link Hotel. It was packed with bloggers… over 90 rooms apparently. Like a whole conference going on! I was feeling a tad bit antisocial, don’t know what’s wrong with me, so I didn’t make many new friends.

Foreign bloggers were also provided with free transportation and given a three day tour of Singapore which I had to miss out on due to uni commitments. (Read: Visiting a kindergarten on Sunday morning to read to them a story about The Teeth Siblings (Adik-Beradik Gigi) It was part of my assessment okay -_-)

The link bridge between the.. uh, Link Hotel. (now I know where the name came from)

The bathroom wasn’t too shabby too! Nice and bright for my much anticipated make-up session. Since I arrived earlier than most of the other bloggers who were on the bus from KL, I had time to kick back and make full use of the complimentary broadband internet. That’s like a total of 4 hours of me-time. Very enjoyable.

The lights in the room were a bit dim though.

NYahahhahahahaha. My cosmetic collection which hardly sees the light of day.

Gotta love the mantlepiece in the bathroom. So very convenient!

When the invitation deems it a black tie event, you know you can go all out. Bring on the extravagant lashes! <3

Fascinators are great alternatives when one is low on cash to splurge on professionally styled hair. I got mine from BabyBeDazzled which is pretty much THE place to get headbands and hairbands from for those on a budget. I’m low on funds after the boomz (souvenir from Singapore) Bangkok trip so need to save up whatever I have left. Dental dinner is in two months and I need cash for dress, hair, clutch, shoes, blings, mani and pedi…and what else ah….oh yah dental dinner ticket. ahahaha.

Falsies, lock and loaded!

I only used some brown and turquoise eyeshadow from the 88 colour palette which I bought from Blushberry almost a year ago and my usual Blitz ‘n’ Glitz MAC Fluidline with the Kohl eyeliner. Kohl eyeliner kind of smudges, much to my disappointment. :\

Okay, just one more picture of my fascinator before I put up pics of my dress (which is recycled from a previous dental dinner. MONEY DON’T FALL FROM THE SKY OKAY. Actually someone should tell me that. I have seriously been overspending. T_T)

To those who were curious, freebra is always my answer. Always. :ppPPpppPP

I buy a new pair every three months or so as the adhesive do wear out. The idea is to slap it on as far left and for the other side; as far right as possible..and clasp it together. You’ll see the difference too!

After getting ready, I went over to Soon Seng and Yen Li’s room to kacau a bit as it was still early. That’s Soon Seng doing up his hair.

Yen Li and I wore the exact same shade!!! Great girls look alike.

The sea of bloggers gathered at the reception area was a little daunting but slowly, familiar faces started to become apparent. Here’s Ginny and Vvens!

That’s Natalie whom I was very friendly to during the entire time – all the time thinking she was this other girl, Carmen. -____- Some more can hug and say bye bye see you again keep in touch! Only found out my boo boo when I came home to tag photos on FB. :\

Met Wei Zhi of KampungBoyCityGal fame and Christine, who happens to be Chee Kiang’s classmate from his short lived IMU days.

Michael, who was there to cover the event for The Star! Gone were the days when he made me pixelate his face. THANK YOU MICHAEL! But just to be safe, won’t be linking him…. unless he says it’s okay!

Tried to get a shot of the crowd before we entered the hall.

A bit like Leo/IU event now. One rep from each Subang school. Got Subang Utama (Chee Kiang), Seafield (Yenli) and SJ (Soon Seng). Chee Kiang said I’m always very excited when there are Subang people around and that I like to group them together to have a photo taking session. LOL. Well if we wanted it to REALLY be a Subang people thing, there were two others (Audrey and Wai Ping(Pinky)) who were running around.

As with any Nuffnang event, there’s the huge backdrop that people would go and have a photo with. Very much like actual gala awards.

With Chee Kiang who came after his class ended at 6pm! Hugs and kisses to him for sitting through the entire thing while I went about making small talk with new friends, gossiping with old friends and camwhoring with the luminaries. Also for being my camera man. Thanks dear..:) That’s why I love you so much!

Gourmet Pringles!

Okaylah sorry one more of the two of us. Shit, the silly feather from my fascinator is hanging over my forehead like a dancer’s headgear. Anyway, the last time we got dressed up for something so glamorous was when we were both only 16 and 17 years old.

Taken back in 2004. On the eve of my birthday, so technically I was 16!

Nuffnang Bloggers from Australia! I’m not too familiar with their blogs but Mel got all excited that I could have said hello to Super Kawaii Mama and Lady Melbourne! =\ Now I regret.

Yenli and I with our smart colour choices, heh. Actually there were plenty of blues that night. Perhaps the next most common colour after black (which is the Nuffies’ colour code). But it was nice, we stood in shades of blue and took pics!

We had little bottles of rock candies as door gifts. It had ‘NN Blog Awards’ and ‘I Love Blogging’ in the middle of the sweets. But because of all the holes made by the alphabets, I cut my tongue a few times while sucking on some. Got ulcer now. Still tastes nice though. *continue to torture myself with more sweets* I seriously don’t know when I will I start having the mentality of a dentist and shun sugary stuff. ;\

OOOh!! Look look! I’m in the programme book! This was some section depicting their journey from their early days. And there I am, their second ever featured blogger for the month of April in 2007. Wheee. For plenty of times, this screen shot has been used over and over. Quite syok sendiri right.

Aforementioned rock candies. Bad for your teeth. Bad. So..very..bad. *dying of guilt from having eaten three today*

But it’s so cute!! The tiny candies come in bright quirky colours. Sigh. Why are bad things so cute.

I think the candies were a great touch. Very personalized.

This is the only photo of the stage that you’re gonna get. From where I was sitting, I couldn’t even see the stage. But we had a big screen right in front of us and as a result both Chee Kiang and I had to give neck massages to each other late at night.

He must have been way too excited. Well, they have all come a long way. So proud of them!

I thought it was pretty good, where Tim and Ming will complete each other’s sentences.

Yee Hou’s pelvis thrust dance when he seals a deal.

Then it was time for the moment that everyone was waiting for. THE AWARDS!!

I’m honestly very grateful that Nuffnang came up with this ingenious idea of picking and awarding the best blogs in the region. I now have gems to trawl as I am losing my touch when it comes to finding good blogs to read. The nominees and winners are of seriously good quality. Not your average trashy eat shit sleep kind of blogs or copy and paste assholes or even head tilting bimbos with emoticons in place of vocabulary.

And here we are! First up, Winners of The Best Blog Shop: Bonito Chico.
It’s not often that I acknowledge that girls are pretty. But this is one of the very few times where I will chase after them just to have pictures with them. They are so hot!!!

Winner for Best Food Blog: IeatIshootIpost’s Dr. Leslie Tey. He’s a medical doctor by day, food blogger by night!

According to Chee Kiang, Jon always quotes from Dr. Leslie Tey’s IeatIshootIpost.sg about nice places to eat around Singapore. He must be really good at juggling his time with his medical career and his food blogging! I’m not sure to what extent his popularity goes out to, but he seems to have appeared on a tv programme before and his camera equipments are sponsored by Canon too.

Quite proud of my boyfriend also. Seems to be quite savvy about a few Singapore blogs. He even reads Taxi Diary!

Given, I know Tongue In Chic is a good example and have become a staple to almost all Malaysian girls… but yeah, didn’t know it has spread like wild fire!

She’s really tall in real life and in the show, she’s quite tiny. That would be nice for a change.

Also, I wanted to tell her that the guy who raped her in Little Nyonya is quite cute, so must’ve been quite nice! I also read that during the rape scene, he was so afraid to put his body weight on her because he was such a gentleman and had to place his entire weight on his knees.

I’m actually enjoying the variety of bloggers I saw there that night. Here we have Leeza Foo, owner of Tasty Cherry Chapstick and Yien Yee, the brains and beauty behind A Shopaholics Den. A Shopaholics Den is one of the must-go-to blogshop review site for all online shopaholics in Malaysia.

And David Wong! Always nice to have friends who come into the Nuffnang family (which pretty much means the blogosphere) from my circle of friends outside the blogging world. This includes people like Wai Ping, Soon Seng and Audrey. I met David Wong during a lunch session at Sakae Sushi and he couldn’t stop talking. So we set him up with one of our friends. Shhh. Secret. Then one day I got some advertorial email from Yee Hou, Cc-ed to David Wong. It included an introduction to their new staff “David”. I took quite a while to put one and one together before sending an ALL CAPS email back to him asking him what in the world was he doing in Nuffnang. He said, “Working.”

And of course, how could I leave the awards without a photo with Xiaxue?

She was very friendly (she sometimes helps me to clean my Farmville and eats from my Cafe in Cafeworld. She’s a nice person like that) and she said, “Wah your boobs like popping out like that,” and I said, “Thank you!! Wait, is that a compliment?” and she said, “Yaa it’s a compliment.” Awwww..so sweet. Thanks Xiaxue.

Ooops forgot to include Diese who was in the nicest shade of blue. But you get to see her shoes anyways.

Long story short, the event wrapped up at 11 plus but due to some logistics issue (poor Yee Hou) we only managed to get back to the hotel at almost 1am. Went out for some bites with Chee Kiang and Soon Seng, both who coincidentally do not have any Cheah or Lam female cousins or siblings. Thus they were talking about how nice it would be to have a younger sister so that they can see if female Cheahs/Lams will be attractive to men. LOL. What kind of thoughts are those.

Chee Kiang left the hotel at 5.30am for his Nike Human Race. Crazy one. Sleep at almost 3.30am some more. At least I had longer hours in bed and went down to meet the other bloggers at 8.30am. Some couldn’t wake up and missed the bus ride to the city.

With the flyer. We were talking about wedding proposals in the flyer. So now he cannot use that idea anymore because I’ve already heard of such wedding proposals. Poor Chee Kiang. hohoho. I’ve already heard of Fireworks over the Grand Canyon, From The London Eye, At Tasik Kenyir, At Mount Kinabalu, At One of Their Parents’ Backyard, Over the Internet (WTF? Got read or not, that #AlvinandRachel thingie.)…. so yeah.

You can have dinner inside the capsule for SGD200 per person. We were like, “wah not bad..” when we first heard it. Come to think of it, I think we forgot to convert back to ringgit. :\

So much space to walk around. We had our own tour guide too, just because we are so called categorized as media people. I thought it was pretty cool that the marketing person they sent to accompany us is named Joleen Lau. So similar to my name!

Drying my hair after checking-in to Link Hotel.

I left Penang early this morning for tonight’s event but will be heading back tomorrow afternoon due to school commitments on Sunday. Sigh.

Plenty of bloggers from Philippines and Australia have already arrived. Read on twitter that the KL bloggers are held up at customs because someone forgot to declare their ciggies. Ah well.

Am heading out for food now. Hope my freshly washed and blow dried hair won’t get greasy from the Singapore smog!

So much for my feeble attempt at live blogging. Got free broadband connection in this hotel room okay so must make use of it!

If I do go for this Singapore trip, I’ll be able to check out places as a total tourist!! I go Singapore often enough and although Chee Kiang and I do think about checking out the super touristy places, we never get around to doing it. So this seems like a good opportunity to do it!

I’ve always enjoyed myself so much whenever I go down to visit Chee Kiang. In fact, I had a great time looking at the pictures I took from 2006 till now. *warm*

So here’s a stroll through my photo album of some of my most favourite things to do and see in Singapore.

Places to see:

Taken in Aug 2006, right after my Year 1 finals.
I know this photo damn drama but this is Orchard Road! Always worth the stroll to make you strive to be more hardworking so you can earn more money and maybe afford a top from one of the shops there. Maybe.

I’m not too familiar with the Singapore night life as the only time I went clubbing in Singapore was that time in 2006 at MOS which has since closed down. Sigh. But if you’re into all that, Clarke Quay has a rather good variety of bars. It’s damn romantic too with the river running by.

If I were to ever work in Singapore (I didn’t say I would ah, dear;P) I would love to have my dental office (or work for a dental office) that faces the Singapore river. It’s so gorgeous and peaceful. This picture was taken when I took the boat ride and it really shows you the old and the new Singapore. Love the skyscrapers.

What trip to Singapore would be complete without doing silly stuff with the Merlion?

Like any other big cities, Singapore never disappoints during Christmas! Some big multi billion dollar company will take on the task and transform the streets of Singapore into Christmas land!

After Far East Plaza (on Orchard Road), Vivo is my most favourite place to shop at! I mean some of the shops can be found here in Malaysia but the things there are like a whole season ahead of us. And I’m talking about the toy shop that I always frequent – ActionCity! That’s where I discovered the Hannari Tofu!

There’s a place I absolutely adore – Sheer Romance! Bikinis of all kinds of prints are available there. There’s a few outlets but the only ones I know of is the one in Far East Plaza and Vivo City! And for shoes right…. FAR EAST PLAZA!! OMG. *froths at mouth* The last time I was in Singapore, I bought three pairs and it only came up to SGD60!!

I’m not sure if the DHL balloon is still there, but if it is, GO FOR IT!! It’s your only chance to go up a hot air balloon if you’re not planning to venture out of South East Asia anytime soon!

Chinatown! The whole Singapore is already chinese itself, somemore need a china town. I’d like to check out Little India though..wanna go see how much do the Swarovski crystals there cost.

Of course, Chinatown is an awesome place to get cheongsams. There’s a really nice one there..but I can’t remember the shop’s name now. -_-

Do check out the Esplanade for your artsy fartsy fix. Plenty of artistes showcase their work there.

This is Chijmes. It used to be a convent girls school which was transformed into one of the more high end places to dine at. We were tricked into eating there by a few friends. *frowns at Abby* We had japanese which was not bad! Many other restaurants there, didn’t have the time and money to check out everything! Maybe next time:)

East Coast Park – seriously a recreational park! Every weekend, families actually come out to rent bicycles and cycle the entire stretch, uncles go fishing here, kids rollerblade, angmoh kids skateboard, college students throw bbq parties at one of the chalets and as I have recently discovered, there’s even water skiing available at a freaking pond. Don’t get me wrong, it faces the sea, but they waterski in a pond with a contraption above that swings them round and round the pond.

Fort Canning Park is where you’ll probably go if you have a concert to catch! I was there for Lady Gaga’s concert and yes….I’ve not blogged about it yet.

NOW, about places to eat:

This is Cafe Cartel.

IT HAS SERIOUSLY AWESOME PORK RIBS!

And who can forget the awesome Siu Lung Paus from Din Tai Fung? Mmmm.

When I met up with Jed and Erin for some really good Siu Lung Paus.

Another special Singapore delicacy that you have to try is the bread with ice-cream kiapped in between. A bit of a challenge to eat it, but it’s really really nice! It’s available all over Orchard Road!

Back at Clarke Quay, there’s this bar that you would have to try just for the novelty factor. It’s called The Clinic! Damn cute one, they have their drinks served in IV packs and you suck it in, then syringes or test tubes which serve as shots. Then wheelchairs and hospital beds as chairs. And you have your drinks from an operating table.

The first time I met my soulmate – Medium Rare Steak. Oh god oh god. This was at Hog’s Breath and the steaks are so so so so so so so so so so so goooooooooooooooooood. I feel like crying thinking about it. Seriously, EAT YOUR BEEF THERE!!!

Max Brenner. Friends who came back from Melbourne raved about it, so I could only travel to as far as Singapore and thus tried it lah, see what’s so great.

The Suckao is great. Mmm. You melt chocolate pastilles in the aromatherapy thingie and then suck it with a spoon that is also a straw. Warm chocolate pastilles melted in milk.

Iguana at Clarke Quay!! The one with the huge huge Strawberry Marguerita! You actually feel full after drinking it (and obviously drunk). It’s only available at midnight or was it 11pm. Something like that. Quite worth it.

One of Chee Kiang’s favourite hang out spots – mainly for the Satay Mondays! As you chill there on Monday nights, you’ll be served with free flow of Satays!

The concept is also a little like Luna Bar as it is situated on top of the Odeon Towers.

At the bottom of the Odeon Towers, there are shallow water features where you can do things like that.

There are plenty of cozy spots at the Loof too such as this mattress laden alcove.

I know I’m supposed to talk about touristy stuff, but it’s always awesome to do as the locals do. Do try the Nasi Briyani Mutton at the Prata Shop. Ask any NUS student and he’ll be like, “Ok come!” The mamak who opened the Prata Shop came out in the papers, something about making his first million or something. What’s the point of studying you tell me.

Taken in August 2009.

Durians at Geylang!! Hawker food in Singapore, sorry ah, as a whole generally suck. But Geylang is pretty decent (haha) if you’re going for some local fare (haha). No seriously, I’m talking about the food. Nothing touristy about prostitutes. Bloody D24 was like SGD30. I almost fainted.

We had frog porridge there, some kind of noodles can’t remember what it was, tau fu fah and yau char kwai dip in soya bean.

Another place you should go if you want local food (according to my very shallow knowledge and the level of Chee Kiang’s willingness to bring me around), go to this place called Ginza. I *think* it’s in or near Clementi. CHICKEN RICE THERE BEST! Best best best best best. With taugeh that kind. Can fight with Ipoh!

Here’s my entry for the Nuffnang Regional Blog Awards.

Once upon a time, there were two jaws named Bogeh and Chewy.

L-r: Bogeh, Chewy.

Chewy and Bogeh were friends. Not exactly, super close that kind but at least they got on sort of well.

Sometimes they shared a good laugh together..

And sometimes they argue and start mouthing off each other.

One day, Chewy said to Bogeh, “OMG LOOK THERE!”

So they looked.

Mr. Pringles said, “Ahh. That was a good one.” and walked away after he excreted a piece of Pringles chip from his can.

The aroma from the Pringles chip started wafting up to their..er.. I guess noses, wherever that is.. and they were both enticed.

Bogeh was faster than Chewy and picked it up immediately much to Chewy’s horror.

“It’s MINE!” Chewy bellowed.

“OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND LET GO!” screamed Bogeh.

They struggled..

It was so intense until suddenly..

‘Prrraaakkkk’. Bogeh broke in half and lay motionless on the parquet floor.

“AI YAI YAI…what have you done?!?!” screeched Mr. Pringles.

Mr. Pringles put his head on the motionless jaws. “No, Bogeh. This is terrible. You fought over a piece of chip from me and now you’re gone!!!” Chewy looked on nonchalantly.

But he was also abit kepo lah, like most Malaysians and Singaporeans. You know how got car accidents sure must see a bit a bit one.

Chewy decided to pretend that nothing happened and slowly put the pringles chip away into the back of his mouth.

“How could you do this to your friend?” asked Mr. Pringles.

“You should be ashamed of yourself!” chastised Mr. Pringles.

“Like I care!” said Chewy indignantly.

Chewy then continued to chew his Pringles chip with all the satisfaction he could muster. “It’s KRRUNCH TIME!” said Chewy.

And made a mess – which showed he was really enjoying himself, savouring the salty chip, bit by bit.

Autopsy results on Bogeh’s homicide will be revealed soon.

—–

“It’s Krrunch Time, Get Playful!” is the theme of this blog post. I was just messing around with some old dental casts which I used for my endo simulation practicals. It’s playing right, sort of like giving life to your soft toys when you were a kid and making a storyline out of it.

So this is the first part of the contest. Don’t expect another story line for the second part of the contest… I hardly have time to shit these days.

Sigh, I might come off sounding like a bitch after this entry is done but I don’t care.

First and foremost, the ultimate most important rule to follow on Facebook when adding a friend is to tell the person, “Hi, I am blablabla we met at blablabla”

Adding Strangers on Facebook

Though I myself do not practice it all the time, but I only leave it blank when I am very sure the person knows that I exist in their world. This is unfortunately not the case for some ignorant fools on my Facebook list.

My criteria to add friends are:

1) We must be acquaintances in real life.

2) If we are merely online friends, I’ll add you because I know of you online. I’ve probably read your blog, you’re probably my customer or maybe you’re famous. I would then just add you but I wouldn’t comment on your FB because I am not thick skinned like that. I am merely enjoying the thrill of having a celebrity on my facebook. *squeals*

One of my major pet peeve is adding people whom I think they are my junior. Or a blog friend. I can’t possibly remember every name and every face right?! So I just add for fear of hurting that person. I mean, who would want to feel insignificant in another person’s life right? Though clearly some people should be bitch slapped with a list of do’s and don’ts when it comes to Facebook, but we’ll get there soon.

My classmates and I roughly know almost all our juniors but it is difficult to remember everyone 100%. So when we see, “Oh okay, these are the mutual friends. Should be juniors lah.” Then turns out that these are some hometown kampung friend of some classmate/junior who goes around adding everyone from my course. Stupid or not? We keep getting tricked over and over and over again. Please keep your desperate friends locked up in some facebook cage app.

And there are a few default pretty girls on my Facebook whom are ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS mutual friends of mine and some random greasy Ah Beng asshole who has nothing better to do but add girls on FB. Personally, I think these pretty girls should be above this. If plain janes like me can spit on Ah Beng hamsap lous, they can do so much more. Like, say, click ignore and don’t bring this wretched creatures upon the rest of the female facebook population.

Commenting on Facebook Statuses/Photos/Updates

Nobody died and made me queen of facebook courtesy but I’ll just tell you what I think. I don’t really care. I’m in a bad mood today.

I’ve deleted people who made stupid/lame comments on my facebook. There was this one old lady whom I thought was a blogger friend who commented on a range of my photos. I was washing Chee Kiang’s legs for a fish spa and I was posing with my (then) new car. Her comments insinuated that I was on all fours, being a slave to Chee Kiang, scrubbing his feet and when I posed with my car, she’ll cluck away going “oh kids these days are so spoiled”. I can’t remember my retort but I let her have a piece of my mind and then she deleted her comments straight away. A few other photos also lah, I can’t remember.

Firstly, if you’re older than me by at least 7 years right, think whether your comment is funny or not.

Secondly, THINK with your BRAIN whether we are close enough to be talking like that or not.

Friends who have reached a certain closeness have the unwritten permission to talk with no barriers. You know, you can do without the politeness and the “so how’s lifes”. Coz you see each other every freaking day at school or at yam cha sessions every other month or maybe back in high school, you shared a very close friendship filled with insults and practical jokes.

Of course it is okay for mere acquaintances to leave a funny comment here and there.

It has to be:
1) Relevant
2) Uninsulting
3) Actually funny

Another old lady (what’s up with all these old ladies) saw some photos I took when I was in Terengganu for my oral health posting trip. I wore a skirt which was just an inch above my knees. Very decent for my standards, no one said anything when I was there.

This stupid woman, whom I presume was from Terengganu coz she was damn proud that I went to visit Terengganu or some bullshit like that, said “Isn’t your skirt a little short?”. This is coming from a lady whose facebook profile pic was of her naked shoulders. I can only hope she was wearing clothes lah. So I was like, “I don’t really care”. And she’s all, “Clearly.”

Last I checked, my mum didn’t even say anything. So who is she to comment on my dressing? Dumbass.

I also have a friend who …deep down.. I’m sure is a really nice fellow. He isn’t exactly aware that the way he communicates is kind of like invading on our personal space. He used to comment on almost all my statuses. The comments were embarrassing because people on my facebook would be wondering why is this fellow leaving all these comments on Jolene’s statuses and most of all, why don’t they make sense?

It got to a point that I was seriously too lazy to respond because I just didn’t find them funny at all. I deleted him and the poor guy asked me why I did that. I mean it hurts to have to deal with it this way because we even met in real life before.

Yes I know that statuses, photos and stuff on FB is free for all. It’s my fault that I added all these people on my FB, yes I know that. But what I’m trying to put across is that there has to be boundaries to follow. So it’s just too bad if there are some strange people lurking around our facebook. But anyone who ‘understands how it works’, would know where to draw the line.

If you realize, people who see each other often or those who belong to a clique are the ones who would interact with each other most on Facebook. These are the people who would be in the same photos on Facebook and who would throw comments to and fro the entire day, making the rest of the gang laugh. Obviously someone who is not close to the gang could ‘like’ the pic or maybe say something funny. But he must not think that it is okay for him to insult the person in the photo like how the rest of the gang does. You don’t know how the system works, don’t pretend you do.

Facebook statuses are other updates are less personal than photos hence it is okay for anyone to comment.

Tagging Me In A Note That Has Nothing To Do WIth Me

When I don’t even know you.. I don’t really care what you have to say. Usually it’s some lameass heartwarming story about friendship, love and worst of all, religion.

I usually get tagged by close friends with those 25 or 10423948234 random things about me notes. I don’t think I’ve ever responded to any. I do want to, but I never seem to get around to it.

My computer is slowly dying on me too, it takes me ages to click on something for it to appear. So imagine the annoying feeling of seeing a gmail notification telling you someone who is practically a stranger tagged you in a note. Obviously curiosity gets the better of you right, then you go and see what’s the note all about. Bloody waste of time.

I’m not trying to be all elitist and eliminating potential close friends. Those who know they can talk without holding back, know it. I mean if we have thrown a few jokes around, we’ve reached that level. If I’ve never even said Hello to you before, that’s how you know I don’t appreciate the sudden inclusion in your list of friends to tag/comment unfunnily on.

Yes, i only have three. Feel free to add on.

I’m damn sleepy.

Before I climb into bed, one more tiny rant. Blog-related this time. Yes I am proud that people google for things that they fancy and manage to get some information on my blog. One thing about doing advertorials, people immediately assume you know everything about the product. Like fuck I know why there are korean words on the handphone’s keypad. Best part is, after asking their questions, they ask me to email them my answers. Wah lau you my boss issit. It irrirates me because why can’t THEY email me? Why must I email them about things they want to know when they are not my superiors/customers but random brainless strangers from the internet?

Long time never get flamed already, maybe I’ll get some when I wake up tomorrow morning. Goodnight world. Wah shit 5am already, somemore meeting customer at 11am tomorrow. Damnit.

Gone are the days where I would pore over my stacks of girly magazines from US, UK and Australia. Being the cynic that I was, I’ve always thought that Malaysia had nothing to offer me in terms of fashion and entertainment. It was in form5 that I picked up my first copy of KLue and I was blown away by how artistic some Malaysians can be.

Because of this, I have always been drawn to the Indie scene in Malaysia. Particularly theatre and the bazaars. While the music and film scene has its own following, I’ve never been a huge fan probably because of all the invitations I get coming in from Facebook and the spam in my emails from budding filmmakers/singers about their upcoming film/gig.

On the 27th of June, all local talents will gather at Urbanscapes 2009 which is presented by Xpac at KLPac promising to showcase all the best that the city has to offer. In other words, it is a creative arts festival! From famous names like Yuna to Twilight Action Girl to weirder ones like Mailer Daemon, they’ll all be there, playing in front of throngs of cityfolks (and maybe some out of towners who are huge huge fans!)

I myself am particularly sore because I have missed out on YET another marketplace event. It’s just a fancier name for a bazaar. Some of the names I recognized from their vendors list are such as Soak Republic and Lah Lah Land. I heard sales were really good at previous Urbanscapes. DAMN YOU YEAR4 FINALS, DAMN YOU! *shakes fist*

I would love to be there to soak in all the happy vibes from quirky local artistes, melodramatic film makers, OTT theatre performers and oh so colourful booths at the marketplace. SIgh. SIgh. Sigh.

Here are some pictures I stole from Flickr of past Urbanscapes events:

I presume this is the much talked about marketplace. – Photo taken from fendyzaidan.

Oooh check out the colours… – Photo taken from Ahmad ‘Cipoi’ Saiful.
Here are the details for those of you who are interested to check it out:

Date; 27 June 2009
Time: 12noon to 12pm.
Venue: KLPac
Ticket price: RM25 (presale) & RM35 (at the door sales)

Surely there are some kiamsiap ones among us who feel that EVEN RM25 might a little steep for an orgy of music, film, arts, shopping and more. While looking through their website, it seems that Xpax/U.O.X. customers are entitled to 2 free tickets if they are the first 200 customers who clamour for these much sought after tickets. All you need to do is top up RM30 if you’re an existing user or buy an RM30 reload card and get a free Xpax/U.O.X starter pack. Remember to be there early if you want to be the first 200 customers to claim your two free tickets from the booth next to the ticketing counter at Urbanscapes 2009!

Don’t hit yourself too hard too if you’ve missed out on the presale tickets. Provided you’re an Xpax/U.O.X. user lah. You are still entitled to an RM10 discount for the RM35 at the door tickets. If you’re not an Xpax/U.O.X. user, you can still buy an RM10 reload card and get get the free Xpax/U.O.X starter pack.

Among the numerous promotions and contests going on for the Urbanscapes (seriously, there are so many.), there’s this contest called (X)SNAPS!

I almost fell off my chair when I checked out the prizes. Nokia N97!!! Plus free airtime for half a year!

As you can predict, this a photo taking contest. They have four categories namely Colour, Fashion, Music and Design.

You can choose to upload your photos at the designated booth at the 24hr KL area by passing over your SD card. Good for procrastinators who will probably go home and say later lah later lah and miss out on the awesome phone.

But if you like, you can also MMS your pics to 26388 and in the subject area, you would have to write:

1. The name of the photo
2. Which category the picture is supposed to be in.
3. Your name.

All must be separated by a comma okay!

But if you want to go home and do some editing to your awesome photo, you can still email it to xsnaps@xpax.com.my. Remember this format ah!

Title of picture:
Catergory of picture:
Name:
Mobile Number:

OKAY. All the best. If I can’t win the damn phone, I might as well try to help others to.

Do enjoy yourself at Urbanscapes 2009 and I can’t wait to see all the colourful pics in the blogs.

On the whole, I think I am generally quite a confident person.

Despite the numerous beatings to my self esteem over the past decade, I think I’m doing quite okay.

But here I go again sounding like a broken tape recorder:

I might not be your conventional beauty but I do not hide my face nor am I shy about what I am lacking/have too much of. What is the point? I’d rather be out there talking to my friends and meeting new people.

Due to certain efforts of mine over the past few years, I’ve been given the chance to do certain things that put me in situations to be scrutinized. Though these opportunities come with endless benefits, it also comes with criticism.

So what’s new?

About how I look again la what else.

I’m not actually bothered by it too much because by now I should have developed an immunity to being insulted for my lack of physical attributes.

I did an advertorial for Maxis back in November and I know, realized and was very well aware that all those other girls who did the advertorial with me are hot babes that I’ve never grown to become. But I have long overcome the fact that I will never be a stunner. I’m cool with it because for years I have made up for that with attitude. The criticisms that comes with it, the shamelessness that I ooze without effort, my bitchiness verbal diarrhea style and various other sohai things that I’m quite proud of.

So if you’re reading this and worrying about me, don’t. These are just my thoughts after having a long talk with a classmate of mine on MSN last night.

I let him see this forum where some people said why are maxis taking advantage of young girls to promote their products and while they are at it, why don’t they use better looking girls? Apparently I looked like a man in some of the photos lah. But yeah tell me something I don’t know. Most of them comments were about the way I looked in the photos instead of the actual product itself. -_-

During the event for the advertorial, there was a make over session. I know the make-up artist was being realistic but I just smiled politely when he said, “All of you girls have beautiful eyes! And Jolene, yours are curved downwards, so we’ll need to work on that.” …As it is, I was already surrounded by some of the most beautiful malaysian bloggers, I just didn’t need to be compared like that.

On Cindy’s blog when she posted her Maxis advertorial, there were some comments about how I was the worse looking one there.

A bit ouch for awhile but this incident today really stimulated some thoughts that need to be jotted down here. Now that I am older, I get over insults within 5 minutes. The usual feelings will be there for a while lah such as shallow breathing and a grimace on my face. Then I’ll be back to normal doing my own thing.

But I was not always like that.

Some of you might have heard this before but I shall take you on a journey down memory lane laden with events that made it clear just how the shallow society viewed me.

When I first entered secondary school, I was like any other 12 year old – boy crazy and naive. I didn’t think I was ugly and any guy who talked to me, MUST have talked to me because they liked me. All these incidents went into that stupid juvenile diary of mine. I had imaginary love triangles or even octagons for that matter.

But talking to that classmate of mine yesterday made me realize that I was not alone in thinking so. Children assumed that they are good looking until reality snaps. I posted this up on my FB status and received quite a lot of ‘likes’ which only further proved my point.

I was snapped out of my reverie on one afternoon in form1. I got to know this boy from my school via IRC and he was in form2, a year above me. And the rule still applied lah, since he talked a lot to me, something must be going on here! I heard from friends that he was on the lookout for a potential girlfriend and felt quite flattered that he was talking to me a lot online.

At this point, he has yet to see me. But me being the perasan kid that I was, thought he probably saw me around school already.

I walked by his class one day and heard the boys in the backrow erupt in laughter. I smiledin their direction and thought to myself, “Oooh…. maybe they are teasing him! Ooh!! So exciting!”

I was at my friend’s house a few days later and he was talking to her on ICQ. He said something like, “Oh the other day that Jolene Lai walked by my class and she smiled at me… ” I sat up straight, very excited to see what he was about to say next.

“I almost fainted ler,” he continued.

I was smiling to myself by then because he must have been blown away by my beauty!

“My friends said want to vomit lerrr she so ugly hahaha,” he went on to say.

The moment I saw that, I frozed. It was like I was slapped in the face. My friend tried to save the situation by telling him that I was actually reading the entire thing. He quickly said, “Eh eh just joking. Don’t smile lah next time k? You don’t smile okay one!”

I got on my bicycle and cycled home from my friend’s place with tears streaming down my face. I’ve not forgotten that incident at all. This guy was regarded as one of the ‘bad boys’ in my school and because of him, I never spoke to boys who had a bit of rogueness about their person. For years, I was pretty sure that they would not bother being acquainted to me as I was not up to standard.

For months after that I refused to be introduced to boys I met over the internet. Don’t worry for these were only boys from school. I was very sure that they would run away screaming when they saw me. I couldn’t take another blow to my ego.

Sometime in the middle of form1, a form2 boy named CX liked me but I didn’t really believe it because I was quite sure it was a horrible prank. He was a bad boy himself and he got a lot of flak from his peers for taking an interest in me. He wanted to join some gang at school and he was chatised for being a sohai and a wannabe for wanting to join that gang and ..on top of that, for liking that ugly girl called Jolene Lai.

I learned about all this in the form of an IRC transcript sent to me by one of his “pet sisters” who I supposed had a crush on him and was trying to hurt me.

A lot of girls had crushes on him and these were girls you would not want to mess with. They were the typical lala muis you would find dwelling in the back classes. Crude and distasteful types. They would scream at me from two blocks (of classrooms) away screeching things like, “CX GOT BAD TASTE!!!!!!!!” and glare at me when they walked pass me.

I was like wtf what did I do. In early form2, that chapter in my life closed. I started hanging out with people who were more open minded and were more into friendly conversations than stupid and juvenile boy-girl relationships that fizzle out within weeks.

I still had random people adding me on ICQ back then and claiming to like me and then after leading me on would say, “Aiyoh you so ugly go do plastic surgery first.”

While the kids around me became less mean as the years went by, it was made clear to me that I am really not the kind of beauty men would desire. When I attended interschool functions, boys would not be asking me for my ICQ number/handphone number. Boys from the other forms didn’t take an interest in me. There were no rumours about guys having crushes on me while my close friends were having boys falling for them right left and center. As a young teenager, these kinda emotions were hard to stiffle but I made up for it by busying myself with crushes and telling them about my feelings. All rejected nicely, btw. They were all sweet boys.

By form5, I was pretty much already the girl that I am today. With a network of friends whom I can be totally myself with, enjoying the company of new friends who are just as funny as me and basically looking forward to life after high school.

Life after high school, meant the start of my blog. With my blog, I had something to back me up. Nobody judged me based on face value anymore. Friends of friends spoke to me warmly because they’ve gotten to know me ‘personally’ via my blog though I’ve not met them before. But as long as they were nice to me, that’s all I could ask for. Old acquaintances who would probably snub me because they are generally the arrogant type, spoke to me like an equal because they could connect with me after reading my blog.

This was of course back in 2005 when this blog of mine had more friends reading it. Now they are probably too busy and perhaps bored of me what with my lack of updates.

Eh let’s get back on track!!

So because I chose to make myself public, I opened myself to harsh criticisms from random passerbys who don’t even know me and just saw my photos here and got disgusted.

They would leave nasty comments about my face on my tagboard and kill my ego for a day or two. But I recovered fast.

One incident that was quite bad was the infamous blog post by another blogger girl who was mistaken for me at a blog meet and felt insulted because she’s definitely not as ugly as me. A blog post was written about the incident, someone sent it to me, I got hurt and the entire blogosphere went into a flurry as people got excited with the flame war that was going on. She and I are friends now and she’s not a bad person at all. Misunderstood and young and myself, sensitive and young as well. Hahaha. All water under the bridge. But this was a classic example of how society viewed me.

After relating all these to my classmate, he thought I was very strong and said some girls might have gotten a bit suicidal for being insulted like that.

Now that I am older, I know that beauty is subjective. Make-up helps and attitude helps a whole lot more. As long as you are comfortable with the people around you, so what’s a little comment from dimwit strangers? They just don’t know the substance that you have that makes you you. The qualities that you have that opens doors for you, it’s your own effort and if people who don’t know you don’t understand that, it’s okay. You’re the one reaping the benefits from such opportunities. So what if I sold my soul? My soul wants to be blessed with material things, so I think I should be happy doing what I do.

There are a lot of pretty faces out there with zero substance and that’s far worse than a plain girl. These girls get bitched about! Plain girls are just not talked about, so that’s better than being bitched about right?

I know I am not ugly when I have my better days, I’m just not what the media wants.

I’ll just have to take it with a pinch of salt and be thankful that I can get over insults fast and just go back to my usual hectic/mundane/eyebrow raising life of tvb drama watching, Chee Kiang missing, shopping, outings, Angel yearning, sticker selling, blog crapping, photos editing, facebooking, dentistrying and exam passing. Gosh my life sounds so boring.

—-

My junior from uni, Aimee Lee, blogged about this too yesterday. I quite like what she wrote and babes, I genuinely think there are no ugly women, only lazy women. Perfect example is the dental dinner pic! You look gorgeous there.:)
