I know this comes as stale news.. but tomorrow is a big day for us.

We are moving the first of our things into our very first rented apartment together. My pots and pans and textbooks will go first. Only that alone has taken up the whole car!! @.@ Might have to use the textbooks as decor on the ceiling or the walls in our tiny apartment.

I would say this is a pretty huge milestone for us as we have been playing the long distance game for.. well, forever! We have never been the couple who saw each other day which I believe allowed us our own space to grow during the past six years in our own ways and yet whenever we get to meet during our semester holidays, we make the most of it and then go back to living our own lives. It was difficult at times but you get used to it.

Being in Kluang for the past six months was great because I could go home anytime I wanted (space) or choosing to go down to him (spending time together). It was a perfect balance, a gradual step to living together.

I have been praying and bugging and praying and bugging and begging for the second leg of my first year dental officer posting to be done in JB and thankfully, I GOT IT!!! We went apartment hunting the very next day.

It still hasn’t quite sunk in… this whole living together thing. It’s exciting and strange at the same time because living on my own usually means that I have housemates. Is he my housemate? My family? What is he? What is this?? It’s a strange limbo between boyfriend and husband. It’s a whole new level of closeness. I think this is what people mean when they say taking the next step.

The both of us did feel awkward as we surveyed the apartments, quite shy to introduce ourselves as a couple, almost like as if we’re too young to be a ‘couple’. We really need to get this whole We-Are-Still-Kids mentality out of our heads because god knows how long ago that was. This is what being in university for far too long does to you. You grow up a little later than your peers.

I have friends my age already buying houses, some even buying houses on their own without a partner involved. It’s all very adultish!

The idea was to get an apartment that was not too far from the causeway, super safe and near enough to my workplace. But because of the rotations a FYDO would have to do, I’ll have to drive around Johor Bahru for quite a bit and best of all, against the crazy morning traffic!

We were very fortunate, albeit very much poorer now too after paying 3 months rental plus utilities deposit for a 700 sq ft place within spitting distance from Hospital Sultanah Aminah, one of the places I’ll be attached to! I keep telling everyone that it’s really within spitting distance! Like, I can literally throw paper planes from my balcony and it would land in the hospital grounds! It’s also a stone’s throw from the seaside..which is basically just rocks because you ain’t got no beach front along the causeway area. No worries! I still have a seaside residence! The sea breeze blows in pretty strongly so I think we can save on aircon usage!

A lovely plus is the fact that Hospital Sultanah Aminah is THE place for all emergency cases so that means when I am on-call, I can just walk over when my phone goes off!

I’m so glad we’re here, the end of our long distance relationship journey. This moment was a hope we held on to dearly for the 5-6 years. We were even surveying Johor Bahru two years before graduation…that’s how excited we were! And to finally be here, we really don’t quite know what to make of it.

and yes, we have both our parents’ blessings to be doing this together. More like no eye see.. hahahaha. <3

All u41 dental officers have to go through a four day induction which is like a camp of sorts and I have been among the chosen ones for this round! It would be awesome if all first year dental officers (fydos) can be here together but of course, come to think of it we can’t leave the clinics half empty throughout the country. There are 110 of us here this week in Kolej Sains Komuniti Bersekutu in Kempas, JB. The dental officers are from Johor, Malacca, Pahang, KL and Perak.

Apparently all future induction courses will be held here. It’s a really beautiful health allied sciences college and the hostels are really new and comfortable too. All officers in the peninsular will have their induction here which is carried out in batches. ALSO, good news to all government servants who will have to have their induction courses one day, the birotatanegara (BTN) has been cancelled forever since Jan 2011!! YAY!!!

The view from the sixth floor.

More hostels nearby.

The top of some of the faculty buildings.

Neighbouring hostels.

The carpark just outside our hostel block!

In a way, it is sort of like a camp as everyone is about the same age. There are only six of us from AIMST but we are trying our best to make as many new friends as possible.

Had dinner with Ee Chia, Steven and Cze-Yin on Monday night!

Pretty awesome to be able to pop out if you think the food’s gonna suck.

For me it feels really surreal to be called by the government to congregate at a place for four days because it just feels like national service all over again. I mean technically we are serving the nation but I couldn’t help feeling this overwhelming sense of nostalgia, walking back to dorms, i really felt like I was back in national service.

My schedule and my name tag.

I am always up for making new acquaintances and this is how it usually is when you go for a camp, you do not expect to see any familiar faces. The strange but awesome part is that I get to choose my room mate. It doesn’t even happen this way at a normal camp! So of course I would choose someone whom I have known for years, someone whom I have lived with for years and someone whom I have plenty of catching up to do with. So glad Cze-Yin is my room mate!

And this is a new friend I have made, Dhanya!

Lie Yuen, she’s pretty much your replacement.

Because AIMST people band together.

But we did make some new friends.

Just a fraction of the 110 participants at the camp.

I was initially worried that I might have to share a dorm with six other girls or something. While it was fun, I don’t think I want to repeat what I went through during national service – sharing a dorm with 24 girls. But to my delight, our room is HUGE! Two to a room and so much floor space! There’s a conjoining toilet with our neighbour but it’s cool.. we made friends, we won’t steal each other’s shampoo. Albeit a little dusty, the bed is really solid and the ceiling fan is cold enough for us as we’re on the 6th floor plus it has been raining quite a bit. The lovely weather does remind me of national service where it was mostly cloudy as I went during the rainy season.

A lovely wardrobe for my so called ironed clothes.

Our two beds and the awesome floor space.

Cze-Yin chillaxing with my laptop.

On our way out to the first lecture this morning.

Another strange thing was that there’s no curfew for us. Most of us are probably still coming to terms with the fact that we are no longer students but real, proper, working adults. The security guards would wave us through and we’d be stunned while still in “Defence Against Security Guards” mode – a skill many of us have acquired as students who had to deal with fussy guards.

I remember in National Service, we would still have talks after dinner and we would walk to the cafeteria after a cool evening bath and settle in for an evening of superstitious or motivational rambling by some trainer.

I’m feeling particularly nostalgic about how I would whip out my notepad and pen to record every single moment that happened in national service while trying to deal with home sickness, making new friends and eating strange food.

In National Service, we were served five meals a day and it is no different here. Two hours of talk is followed by half an hour or one and a half hour of makan, another two hours of talk, another round of makan. We makan SIX times here.

In national service, if we skipped any makans, we were required to be in the cafeteria. But here we can adjourn back to our rooms and come out again when there was another lecture to go to. The room is in a perpetual state of coolness.

In national service, I arrived in a bus, without a single soul who could speak to me in English. I thought it was the most important trait to have back then. Fast forward 6 years and here I am, less of a banana and arrived in my car. Drove here straight after work and the feeling was …for lack of a better word…awesome. I just felt this vast amount of freedom to just up and leave anytime. Back in the day, camps meant a month of planning, liasing with friends, getting your mum to do some shopping for you. But now, I can just pack a few necessities, shop for some stuff and throw everything into my car boot and sing loudly to Fly FM for one hour plus before arriving at the campus where my induction is held.

When I went for camps, surely I would forget to pack something or I would realize that I really really could use with something. And I would never get it. I would then have to suffer in silence. But last night, we needed floor mats because the room was dusty and it flooded on my side of the room as we forgot to close the window. Out we went to a grocery store about 2km away, without feeling even the slightest bit of tiredness to stock up on some floor mats, toilet rolls and snacks. All because I had a car. I am in CAMP and I have my car here with me. I can say that over and over again.

I think the best part is that I have my favourite soft toy pillow here with me, my P1wimax modem here with me and my kettle as well. As I am quite high up, the speed is mad crazy. When I download movies, it’s like way faster than the speeds I get back home in Kluang. I have never even been this well equipped at a camp.

While my colleagues have been very supportive of me for the past 5 months, I have never had the chance to meet so many FYDOS at once. I don’t feel like I’m in a working environment, it seems like university all over again because no one here is your senior (or in some cases, no one here is very much your senior).

I have three more days to go. And then it’s Singapore for the weekend. Singapore’s like, 20 minutes away. How awesome does my camp get?!? Internet + Boyfriend Who Is 20 Minutes Away + Car + Cold Weather + Comfy Bed….I’m one happy cookie.

Once upon a time, I had my graduation ceremony.

It’s so long ago that my graduation ceremony photo albums pops up on Facebook’s Photo Memories every now and then. But it is my graduation day, and no matter how long it has been, it will be up here. My europe trip too. Even though it happened in mid-2009, one day I shall post all if not some of my pictures taken in Amsterdam, Paris etc.

After getting our certs! And yup, no nice photos of me on stage by my dad/Chee Kiang. There’s one professionally taken by the gown rental/photography people which I have collected but have yet to scan it… it’ll just get hung up somewhere at home. There’s gonna be a little shrine on one of the walls dedicated to my graduation.

With Dr. Manikandan and Dr. Karthik. Dr. Karthik is like a super teacher. He was there with us from (almost) the beginning till the end of our studies. He thought us the super basic stuff like dental materials and cavity designs all the way to complex things like post and core, crowns and bridge, cast partial dentures.. we can’t thank him enough. He is extremely dedicated to the students and helped us in any way he could. We were initially afraid of him because he put on the bad cop persona but over the years, he became a dear friend and mentor to all of us.

Dr. Manikandan is one of the dental officers who sees patients before deciding if they are suitable for the students. He also played a major role during our Clinical Management Report and credits to him for the beautiful before and after photos taken with the clinic’s camera. He also earns many brownie points among the students here by being one of the hottest staff members around! That being said, Dr. George is still a favourite among most female students. HEHEHE. Sorry everybody, the secret is out.

Found Dr. Brindha and Dr. Niekla!!

These are the two most motherly lecturers I have here.

Dr. Brindha is Dr. Karthik’s wife and the both of them arrive at AIMST at the end of 2006, early in our second year. She was the good cop to Dr. Karthik’s initial bad cop. Dr. Brindha is usually the one to reassure us when we are faced with “OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT” situations. She takes her time to clear our doubts for us and is super super super patient.

Dr. Niekla.. probably the most popular lecturer at the dental faculty. She has recently left AIMST so it’s quite unfortunate that the juniors will not get to know her . You people at IMU better appreciate her! She’s probably the most animated, adorable, caring and understanding lecturer ever! She has no qualms about letting her hair down when joking with students and swings back into professional mode when it comes to our paediatric sessions. Yes, she’s our paediatric dentistry lecturer. With her good PR skills, she’s excellent with the kids and she’s the one who taught us about the importance of a reassuring touch to improve our communication with the kids.

With my patient, Mr. Phoon! Mr. Phoon is probably one of my most caring patients ever… I only met him during the final leg of my final year, a time when stress levels were sky high, tears were held back by fanning ourselves frantically. When my clinical management report (CMR) patient told me that she probably could not come for anymore treatment, I really didn’t know what to do. Mr. Phoon, whom I had a session with that day, saw my crumbling face and offered to become my CMR patient. He said he could come anytime I needed him to. I was so so so touched by his sincerity but I had to persevere to convince my first patient as I had already started with her case and there was not much time left. Thank you so much, Mr. Phoon. My junior who took on your case is very lucky to have you as a patient.

Finding a good patient back in uni was seriously rare. I can only name like… a handful of patients who were nice to me. Most were nightmares. I had one infamous nightmare. Hahaha. No names please!

With Prof. Smales, a man who loves us as much as we love him. He still has his british humour about him which is not quite registered among my classmates most of the time but we do love him so much. He is the one who build up the entire aimst dental programme with the help of Datuk Dr. Rohani, Dr. Robinson and Prof. Comfort. But this AIMST BDS programme is his baby.

In the initial years, he would come in every other month to tell us about the developments of the programme. He would tell us about the construction of the simulation lab, the technology lab, what we were to expect in our new dental building at the new campus (which we only saw for the first time in our third year) and later on, the successful accreditation of our course. It was a long journey and he was with us all the way. I believe that this is a privilege that the first batch of dental students have managed to enjoy. People in the fourth batch and so on would probably never get to know Prof. Smales the way we did. I’m sorry that you guys did not get to see the school transform to become what it is today but please appreciate all the facilities that you have here at AIMST because it wasn’t always like that.

When we came out from the great hall, THIS was awaiting us. We were stunned into silence. It didn’t quite register at first.. but we eventually calmed down and were overwhelmed with such gratefulness towards our dental juniors. you guys are the best.

Pet peeves in the clinic:

1. Chinese patients who exclaim how delightful it is that there’s a chinese dentist in a government dental clinic. It embarrasses me, as a chinese, that a fellow chinese can say such things out loud like it is so normal.

2. When telling patients to sit down, they sit on my chair instead of the dental chair. It is annoying in an innocent kind of way, kinda amusing too. But today lagi teruk, a used bib was left on my chair as the patient walked out! So convenient hor!

Been reading a few happy blogs recently and happy blogs always make me want to indulge in all the hobbies that I am supposed to have. My new found hobby: Cooking, duh! Photography, blogging, sticker selling……drama watching is more like a habit..so, nothing very creative with that. Good blogs make you want to create and share!

Here are two of my latest favourite ones before I spam you with today’s cooking photos:

Rob & Lauren – A young married couple – really young like, the girl is about my age (haha perasannya me) – who are one of Canada’s top wedding photographers and are really passionate about what they do. The best part is the two of them run this wedding photography business together and if you’re into portraits, wedding photography and randomness, read everything!! Or more like see everything, since it’s a photoblog. Love their talent. It helps that the guy looks like Justin Long too.

The Journal of A Girl Who Loves To Cook – I’ve long heard of her name but can’t really recall when and how or who told me about her. I didn’t know Delectable had such a long history and the brand was brought to my attention when Mel raved on FB about the christmas themed cupcakes that were sent to her office. She has immortalized Su’s famous Penguins in the office’s fridge. Each of her blog post is accompanied by pictures of her gorgeous cakes, teeming with so much creativity that defies human limitations. And she is so full of sunshine in every sentence, so grateful for her talent and support from all that loves her and her work. And most of all, she is living her dream by opening her own cake shop. I love her story. If I had a bucket list, it would be to visit her shop and eat one of her delectable delights!

Because of my forced-confirmation from loved ones (“ok ah my mee hoon? edible ah? Can serve or not you say?”) that my fried mee hoon was a-ok during my New Year’s Day potluck ‘do, I decided to cook it again this evening. Heh. Just because it ain’t stir fried something/soupy something, so better get some variety under my belt while I can.

First up! Soggify the mee hoon! I store my mee hoon in the freezer, in a plastic bag, as I don’t have enough containers. So apparently nothing happens to raw mee hoon in subzero temperatures.

Remove unwanted particles from the bean sprouts.

Ingredients! Chicken (i’d rather use minced chicken, but damn Giant doesn’t even have chicken fillet, so I had to make do with chicken keel. ), fish cakes, garlic cloves, chinese cabbage.

Do you like my pink knife and pink chopping board?!? *squeal*

Taro’ everything in and stir fry with olive oil and a pinch of salt.

Blanch the soggy mee hoon in boiling water to cook it a little. Then toss it into the wok to cook with the other incredients. Add dark soya sauce to get it to look brown and authentic and more importantly, light soya sauce for taste!

Ta-dah! Fried Mee Hoon! And as usual, I overcooked again, so I might be having fried mee hoon for tomorrow’s lunch, tomorrow’s dinner and the day after tomorrow’s lunch. T_T

Here’s bringing eat shit sleep to a whole new level! I show you HOW I eat and shit and sleep!

But for today’s entry, just the eating part.

So today is a very random blog post of my latest hobby: COOKING!

I’ve always wanted to ensure that my meals are home cooked as much as possible and now that i have six months to live on my own (80% chance that I’ll get JB for the second half of my First Year Dental Officer (FYDO) programme then Chee Kiang and I can move in together sometime in April. FINGERS CROSSED!), I don’t need to worry about whether my housemates will want to eat some or whether they are going out for dinner without me. So everyday I can cook and experiment and basically bore my friends silly on facebook with those many dishes that I sort of whip up every night.

Despite multiple meh attempts, I’m still quite enthusiastically reading cooking blogs and websites and wondering if I can do the same! Some hits, some miss.. and I present to you today’s concoction!

One of my favourite cooking blog is The Noob Cook! She makes everything look so easy and I’m thinking of using one of her recipes for a chinese new year dish to bring to the reunion table. I chose to make Chicken Broth with macaroni as she has made it out to be some sort of comfort food, something nice and warm to stone in front of a good ol’ TVB Drama – which is precisely what I did!

I made broccoli soup last week with Maggi Mee chicken stock cube since I did not have the time or the resources for a proper chicken broth. It was okay but very Aginomoto-ish. ;| One day I shall attempt my broccoli soup again.

Here are the ingredients that I used for my broth: Couple of onions, two stalks of celery, two garlic cloves, a handful of baby carrots (had too many left over from last week’s grocery shopping <–damn aunty right me! @.@), a chicken drum stick and a chicken keel.

I actually really hate celery.. but cooked celery is okay. Maybe I am a big girl now that’s why, my taste buds are maturing now!

Here’s after I have chopped everything up, 1tbsp of salt and 1tsbp of sugar, add water just enough to cover all the ingredients. I’m supposed to leave it to simmer for about 30-40 minutes. At the end, the taste was there but it’s not to the level that I want. Perhaps I should leave the broth overnight next time to get optimum taste!

My First Chicken Broth!! <3

Poured over Al Dente macaroni! Mmmm! But as usual, I overcooked again and I am now stuffed.

I might want to get a tiny oven with my next paycheck as so many recipes require an oven! And a bigger cooking pot. Can’t believe these are the things I want now. -_- But I’m happy!!

So it’s been a whole month of Kluanging… the first few days were quite hard to get by.

*goes about pretending that I didn’t just leave this blog unblogged for the past month*

For starters, I don’t have any friends or family members here. It was quite tough to come home to an empty house praying that the electricity won’t get cut off because if it does, I have no one to scream out for.

But like all the shit that have ever happened to me, I usually embrace strange new circumstances quickly and fall into a comfort zone.

So here’s my comfort zone:

I wake up at about 6.30am (I know) and roll in bed till like…7am? Then I stumble into the bathroom and slap on some eye-make up (only eye concealer, without any foundation so that my skin doesn’t age because of cosmetics..haha like very pro like that). Depending on what’s available in the fridge, I pop whatever it is in my mouth and make my way to work in under 5 minutes! How awesome is that right? Even back in uni I had to like travel 15 minutes to campus and I thought that was near! Actually the whole of Kluang is like 5-10 minutes from any one point to another.

The day flies by with about 20-25 patients (some of my classmates have reportedly managed 70 patients a day. How is that possible?).. I’m doing things that I learned in my second year of dentistry, nothing like the intense stuff I had to endure in my final year. Some of my classmates are attached to specialist clinics but I’m to be doing six months worth of outpatient work (or as we call it, OP) which is pretty much routine dental treatments, nothing much to scream about. Relatively stress free but my mind still draws a blank at times and I seem to be developing the bad back that all dentists dread.

Especially when I have to extract an upper molar, it takes quite a lot of effort on my part to get it out and I’ll be in a weird curved position which is hell for my back, with sweat pouring behind my visors and the muscles in my right hand cramping up. If I couldn’t go on any longer, I’ll go round to the next bay and get some help from my seniors who all willingly come to help me and heroically sort of just roll out the tooth that I have been struggling with. I’m always dumbfounded with how easy they make it seem.

I’m the only First Year Dental Officer at my clinic and there are four other senior officers here with me who are in their second, third and fourth year already.

By 4.30pm, everyone will be seated at the waiting area waiting for the punch clock to belt out a rendition of Fur Elise.

I get home slightly after 5pm and start making dinner, as you can see in my facebook mobile uploads if we’re FB buddies.

A couple of chinese shows, answer some sticker orders and I’m usually too knackered to even edit photos, blog or upload new stocks to The Sticker Monster.

But thank god for public holiday like the one today! And yes, that’s why I’m here typing away.

So here are some photos from my Galaxy S of my life in Kluang, which have all been uploaded on my FB mobile uploads album..so nothing new if you’re on my Facebook friend!

This was taken on my first day in Kluang. I got myself a fully furnished place (even comes with an airconditioning unit in the living room!!) which is about 5 minutes away from work.

The clinic that I am posted to! They call it a Klinik Kesihatan, sort of a small integrated medical facility. The pharmacy and the medical side is on the ground floor while the dental clinic is on the first floor!

The inside of one of the surgery rooms. One of the benefits of being posted to Johor is that I get to use the OHCIS which is a digital way of keeping patients’ records. Apparently Johor was chosen to run the beta version and only a town in Selangor is using it.

Dad got me a budgie to keep me company in Kluang. I love how blue its feathers are and on the back of its head the feather looks like newspaper print in blue. Since it’s a blue bird, we were thinking “Lam Cheok” (blue bird in cantonese) and it ended up becoming Lanciao. To reserve some form of dignity and cuteness for the bird, its name is Elsee. Elsee is a blue bird. Elsee is a very noisy blue bird. Elsee is a very noisy blue bird that eats seeds infused with honey and egg (for protein). Elsee eats confusing seeds. Seeds come from trees. Why is there egg in Elsee’s seeds?

A while ago, my little nephew came round to visit! Mum’s holding him from launching at Angel.

Angel doesn’t give a damn. Most importantly is that her bowl gets refilled.

Another peek at Kluang life! As with all other parts of Malaysia, it rains heavily in the evenings so I’m still under the impression that Kluang is a cooling place! Hope this assumption stays true for the rest of the year! Pictured here is a portion of Kluang Town on a rainy afternoon.

This is as close as I get to a hypermarket. There are three Giant supermarkets here (only one of it is sort of a hypermarket)…well, I make do.

Candies at Kluang Mall…….i helped myself to some. Heh.

The Sticker Monster HQ has been established at my new place, although I’ll only be here for six months. But it’s more comfortable now as I don’t have to shift my stocks up and down the North South Highway like how I did back in uni when I had sem breaks. Good news is that my stuff can stay at one place, bad news is that I no longer have semester breaks.

On my second weekend I went back home for a day trip up to Ipoh to meet with some of the ex classmates who got posted to Perak and Penang. Boo to those who couldn’t come down.

Poh Yee shows us how Ipoh people park – TRIPLE PARK!

Another lonely evening, heading back into Kluang.

A little something to keep me busy! Many new stocks to be uploaded on The Sticker Monster! Thank god it was a public holiday and I have finally managed to photograph all the stocks.

Not that different from the last five years…………

As dad was back from Indonesia on my third weekend home, we decided that it was high time to take our proper studio shots before the novelty of graduating wears off.

Dad struts his stuff for the camera.

Obligatory yumcha session at Melur. It was an important meeting because we had to discuss about the goodie bags that we were preparing for International Dahlings’ Weekend 2010! Read about the first International Dahlings’ Weekend here!

Back in Kluang again… this is how Malaccans and Johoreans roll. My house too has an antenna that is damn tall to get Singapore channels.

My fully equipped kitchen! No oven though….after a few paychecks, maybe I’ll get one and….uh, learn to bake? Fingers crossed!

Hope I have not been boring my Facebook friends with photos of my dinner. I’ve become one of those eat shit sleep Facebookers! But it’s always an adventure as I am learning the ropes of reallllly living on my own. In Kedah I had my kedah mum and dad, Lie Yuen and Cze-Yin, and my other sisters, Zhu Zen, NIen, Brenda, Poh Yee..etc etc.

I wanted to cook regularly too in Kedah but I didn’t want to be left out from the dinner time gossip… but now that I am alone, I can actually cook everyday! The tough part is planning ahead. ;|

My godma has a very good system where she cooks enough for the whole weeks, with a variety to boot, and separates each dish into smaller portions and pops them in the freezer. She then takes out a couple of containers each day to reheat. So clever right?

I loooove soup. That’s some herbal soup packet I got from Giant. The brown dish is some brinjal in dark soya sauce, stir fried with eggs and onions. The veggie dish is made up of four angled beans, fishballs and taugeh.

My usual broccoli+chicken+oyster mushroom in oyster sauce combo to accompany my leftovers from the night before.

A truly FML moment, dripping dark soya sauce without knowing it. This was when I had to clean out the fridge because an egg was placed at a wrong angle and slammed into the chiller’s door.

On my fourth weekend, Chee Kiang came up to Kluang to visit me. Just to test how near is Kluang to JB, I decided to try driving down. It takes me an hour and a bit… can be quite tiring after a long day’s work! I had a nice time exploring City Square while waiting for Chee Kiang to cross over from Singapore.

Bringing him around Kluang where we seriously pigged out. So damn sinful lah if you’re on a makan trip. This was taken at the famous Kluang Railway Station Coffee place.

We had surprise visitors from home that night! Charis and Aloysious were here in Kluang to attend Charis’ cousin’s wedding.. thank god for Facebook or else Charis would not know that there is a lonely girl in Kluang who could do with some company from home.

And Samsung Galaxy S has only one lousy point – no flash.

I managed to meet their little girl, Cheryl too!! I love babies!!!

Before Chee Kiang left the next day, we HAD to try the Kluang Railway coffee or else his first trip to Kluang goes unjustified. Ignore the men digging his teeth with his straw.

The prices are awesome!! You can just eat and eat and eat..

A half boiled egg is a half boiled egg.

But this Roti Bakar Bulat is SOOOooo good. They have the Roti Bakar Keping which is the usual sliced bread with butter and kaya slapped in between. This one is like a hamburger bun that has been sliced into sections with the butter and kaya oozing out from the sides. I WANT TO GO BACK FOR MORE~

The rustic interior. Lie Yuen and I will have a photography expedition in Kluang when she comes to visit!

All fenced up! Chee Kiang says it’s to prevent birds from flying in.

Talking to Lie Yuen on the phone. No lah, we are not like Siamese twins, just that she called to ask about some upcoming dental conference that we are keen on going for.

Can imagine his 1940s Shanghai whatever-you-call-a-man’s cheongsam flapping behind him with a bowler hat on as he waits for his beloved (me!) to arrive on the next train.

After stuffing our tummies with ‘breakfast’, we immediately went for ‘lunch’. Tangkak beef noodles!!

I love mine with beef stomach and tendon…Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. My senior at work brought me there for lunch one day and ever since then, I’m hooked!

Chee Kiang’s train has arrived.

Counted on him to survive the train ride before I decide if I should take the train for my future visits to Singapore. According to him, it was damn fast! It arrived in Woodlands within two and a half hours!

All aboard~!

After dropping Chee Kiang off, I drove around my housing area. That’s Gunung Lambak in the distance. Like Gunung Jerai (the mountain that I saw everyday in Kedah), it gets enveloped in mist in the mornings. I get to see the whole mountain too from my surgery room’s window!

Later in the day, Cze-Yin came down from Melaka (she underestimated to distance and was super tired) to have dinner with me. My second visitor!!

So that about sums up life in Kluang for now.

Ever since I was in Year1, I have been hoping, praying and wishing that I would get Johor when I start my compulsory three year service with the government.

The reason is very obvious. Chee Kiang has three years with the Singaporean government as well.

With fingers and toes crossed on a couple of Fridays ago, it was written in the letter from the healthy ministry that I was indeed due to report at Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Johor! I was ecstatic!!

Long story short, I thought I could get my way again the second time around but as expected, Johor Bahru was just wishful thinking for now and here I am in Kluang, feeling nervous about my first day of work tomorrow.

The stuff going through my head seems to be even more than the feelings I had about finishing dental school and graduating. It just seems like a different ball game, this working thing.

Prior to driving to Kluang, I had a very difficult time finding a place to stay. Kluang is not quite real estate heaven, no one bothers to list any properties for rent on any of the property websites. But fortunately I had a junior from school, Vivian, and a new friend I met on twitter, Jonathan, (thanks Jason for introducing us!) who each gave some suggestions as to where I should stay.

Google maps became my best friend and I think the GPS is probably the best thing since the mobile phone. Seriously. Papago is actually better than Garmin in terms of refreshing rate.

The point is….I have to try to do this on my own. I’m scared but at the same time I am excited. I have to keep reminding myself that I am not here to be a student, I am here to work and earn money. Like ACTUAL money that gets deducted for EPX, income-tax. I’m still trying to take it all in. Walking into the KWSP office in Shah Alam was still rather surreal for me.

I still feel like a freaking student!

I was of course a little disappointed that I got Kluang (the other choice was Kota Tinggi). But at least I am in Johor. All this while I was just blinded by the fact that Chee Kiang and I can shorten our distance for the first time in almost six years but when I reported for work at the hospital, the seriousness of the job settled in and I think the motivation is sinking in as well. I’m not just here because I love someone, I’m also here because I have a purpose to serve. I’m pretty gung-ho about this new job, if you can’t tell. I heard that my clinic will have 100 patients a day. That sounds pretty awesome either way.

Kluang is only three hours from home and about 1.5-2 hours to Singapore..see lah if I want to drive or something. I can even take the KTM from here!

Being working adults (wahhhh), Chee Kiang and I will probably have less time to see each other if I was posted back home. But with me being in Kluang, seeing each other would be easier and by seeing each other more, we get to be in the same line of thoughts as we grow through this phase of our lives. We have so much to think about for the future – not just marriage lah u kepo aunty – but like where we actually want to live, what we actually want to do with our professions ..we need to settle down somewhere. And without constantly talking about it, we can never reach an agreement.

With discussions of big issues, come disagreement I’m sure. So if we maintained our distance of over 800km and seeing each other only every 1-2 months, once, (sometimes we are lucky enough to have reasons to see each other for three weekends at a go, or a few days of holidays together when we were still in uni) we won’t be able to talk about the big stuff and ideas would individually form in our heads as we grow up. We make up our own minds about what we want in life and automatically assume that’s what the other one wants as well.

But being here, nearer, we won’t have to spoil any rare weekend by disagreeing about something that we want together in the future. That’s the idea of why I chose Johor.

My stomach keeps clenching whenever I think about my first day at work. I worry about arriving late, I worry about making first impressions, I worry about parking spaces at the clinic, I worry about my lunch! And please don’t get me started about worrying if any of my clinical knowledge has escaped my brain. SO DAMN SCARED! AHHHH!!!

This will be my first real job. It’s a definite jump from the days where I worked part time at a nail art salon in Sunway Pyramid when I was 15. From scrubbing callus from the feet of rich tai tais, pushing back their cuticles, changing the dirty water (had to row 20 litres of dirty water to the nearest toilet) every morning and sweeping the floor…..to well, being a dentist!

Wish me luck…I’ll be needing it.

Latest dream of the afternoon: Dreamed that I was narrating a story (ala ancient TVB drama) where a young man visits the madam of a house and straddles her. She doesn’t reject his advances (but nothing was shown lol malaysian tv in my brain) as she is a lonely woman.

Then as the door is closed, I become the madam and I start to get aggressive by plucking and snapping of his teeth one by one, while looking at a study model of his teeth. The teeth was some how spread out in OPG style (x-ray of your jaws) BUT in plaster of paris, with the teeth snapped out accordingly.

I was just snapping his teeth off one by one while he sat there but with anger in his eyes. I snapped everything off with my fingers and suddenly family members started returning to the house so I left one quadrant of his dentition in tact. (the entire dentition is divided into four..so one quadrant is 8 teeth.)

I knew he was going to take revenge but I had to get away from him.

Then I forgot what happened. LOL.

Next thing I knew, Linda Chung (wtf) was forcing me to chomp on glass and eat them.

I couldn’t tahan swallowing the pieces of glass so I started to retch out bits of glass. I had to puke it out carefully so that I did not cut my throat. The retching woke me up. UGHH. Luckily I didn’t puke on Chee Kiang’s bed.

Oh yeah, I’m in Singapore now. HI!

Three months after Chee Kiang has entered the work force, I finally get around to blogging about his graduation which took place on the 10th of July.

We also travel back to a time when I was still a student, who had her OSCA (a part of my fifth year final exams) on Monday, and still I flew to Singapore on Saturday morning. That’s balls man! Might not have done it if it was a theory paper lah but well, I can say anything now, I passed my final year! Whee!
It was quite the adventure actually. Couldn’t sleep on Friday night because of exam tension so slept for two hours before waking up at 4am and thankfully I was quite alert while driving all the way down to Penang airport where I parked my car for the night and hopped on the plane. Spent a night in Singapore and arriving back in my room in Sungai Petani at 2pm on Sunday to plonk myself in front of my notes once more.

THANK GOD THAT’S OVER.

Taking all these graduation photos ie. playing with his mortar board, touching his gown made me worry that I might jinx my own graduation.

Looking smart with an unglam background.

The microwave oven does not make a good cameraman.

This is the photo that was so wrongly interpreted by all my well meaning facebook buddies. I was only giving him his graduation present.

So apparently NUS make special graduation bears and lions for the Class of 2010 and Chee Kiang didn’t want to lose to Jon who already has the lion.

My mum hopes that AIMST will provide some kind of soft toys so she can buy one for me. <3

I’m quite happy that there was a seat for me at his graduation apparently. Seats at my graduation are kinda limited so it’s going to be tough. ((

Meet Chee Kiang’s Aunt and Mum! We were choosing the nicest looking bear for him to hold in his pictures.

Hehe, so we chose the bear. You can’t buy the super big one though, I was told.

Meet Grad The Bear. He’s cool like that.

Like twins! Same collar and gown all..

NUs wants you to know it is an NUS bear, if you didn’t know it already.

With his parents and his aunt.

While Grad the Bear just stones at the side, waiting for his turn to camwhore together.

NUS did a pretty good job putting up some solid backdrops for the graduates to commemorate their special day.. unfortunately it started to rain. Sigh.

You can’t see the rain here but on Chee Kiang’s right shoulder is a guy with a hand over his head – showing you that it is indeed raining.

That’s Leong Hui and his family and Jon’s so nice to be the designated camera man of the day. I had just received my DSLR from my dad at that time and I was still like, “HOW DO WE WORK THISSssss” so I stuck with my PnS and Jon took over. Turns out I have been using manual focus instead of autofocus which is why my photos all suck. But it has gotten better ever since. But I am still rather miffed at the colours of my recent New Zealand pictures, too many dark ones. What am i doing wrong?!

I like this picture a lot and the many variations of it. Even Grad the Bear gets to be in the pictures!

Much thanks to cameraman slash dear friend Jon.

Housemates <3

And we bumped into Jiun Haw there who also graduated from NUS this year! He was there for one of his friend who graduated from the Faculty of Science or something..

We used to walk home together with Chung Lern and Teng Choon after school.

Grad the Bear made for a good blanket as it was quite cold in the auditorium.

After sitting through the speeches and many other graduates, there’s Chee Kiang finally!! Yay!!

Close up shot courtesy of Jon.

Leong Hui’s close up. I didn’t bring my tele lens.

Choon Han, who is Chee Kiang’s colleague now.

Didn’t know Jon took this picture! I’m like some dinosaur, not willing to explore new photography gadgets.

The screen would constantly show happy graduated faces clapping and cheering for their classmates.

Just a quick glance at the size of the audience that day.

This is…er I can’t remember her name but she was the top student of her class. She speaks very well and is so pretty to boot! Somemore so smart!! Wahhh jealous die me. The list of book prizes she had just went on and on and on.

The two tired photogs. With Grad the bear admiring Jon’s tie.

As the valedictorian’s speech came to an end, there was a loud explosion from the ceiling! Luckily Jon managed to capture it. I mean he already knew was going to happen because he had his graduation ceremony as well and for every ceremony, they will release streamers and balloons too!

The balloons then proceed to fall over the audiences.

People start to reach up to touch the balloons. Wish I was down there too. *bummed*

Like idiots we shouted at him from where we were standing (quite high up) and thankfully he turned up to look.

Then he ignored us and continued to layan his friends down there. ;P

Yay I’m in the pictures again! With Eng Hooi and her sister Cheryn.

One of the many couply photos of us, a must do on one of our graduation days. Ahem. Mine coming soon, so there’ll be more. Stay tuned.

If I didn’t wear this dress for his graduation day, it would have ended up being the one I would wear on mine. Oh well. I look like I am some academician!

This girl printed her classmate’s head and stuck it onto a cardboard as the guy didn’t come for his own graduation. Damn realistic right the head?

I was fooled by these cookies! Thought I could eat the icing but it’s just a damn sticker.

The monument comes with some description.

In other news, thank you to those of you who commented in my previous post about whether I should just keep my blogshop a blogshop or make it a store! I have decided to set up an online store!

The reason why anyone would want a smartphone these days is just so they can update their status anytime, tweet about something exciting that has just happened (not necessarily what others may consider to be exciting) or even take a quick snap of the silliest thing and putting it up on the world wide web immediately!

I used to wonder if humans in the past knew that there would come a day where the one thing that they need almost as much as food, water and oxygen would be the MOBILE PHONE.

Ever felt like you lost an appendage when you forgot to bring your phone out for the day?

I know I have.

From this revelation, I had wondered what would be the next big thing that people could not possibly live without! I think facebook comes pretty close to becoming a necessity these days.

The Samsung Galaxy S integrates all my social media needs extremely well! Almost every single thing in the phone comes with an ability to share on Facebook, Twitter and any other applications that you have downloaded like WordPress, Flickr, Picasa..etc.

Do have a look at the three videos below (split up into three parts because the file was too big for lousy youtube!) for a tour of the social media tools available on the Samsung Galaxy S! At the same time you can see how fast you can switch between screens. I really love the touchscreen, it’s extremely responsive. Granted, it responds mostly to the pads of your fingers, much like the iPhone. With my Satio, I grew accustomed to using my nails to tap. Not sure how they differ, technically, but oh well. Human beings are able to adapt to any strange new conditions.

Part 3

The photos below might be similar to the video but you know, there are always those of you who are too lazy to click on videos! (Shame on you! All my effort to record, delete, edit, upload..ughh)

Since I have not done much of a tour around the interface, here’s the draggable notification bar. It has the wifi, bluetooth, silent and vibration options at the touch of a button. When a new email comes in, it will appear as a tiny logo at the upper left hand corner. If it’s a facebook notification, there’ll be the facebook logo instead and if it’s a new mention from twitter, then a little bird sits at the upper corner there. Just drag the bar down to access your latest email/message! I LOVE IT!

Boo. I’m unpopular like that. T_T

Alternatively, with the always-reliable options button on the lower left hand corner of the phone, away from the SUPER AMOLED (yeap just have to say it in caps) screen would allow you to also check your notifications (same functions) and edit your apps, search for something within your phone, change your wallpaper and go straight into settings. Side track: Going into settings to tweak your phone to function the way you want it is very much hassle-free. Doesn’t induce any headaches at all!

I have Facebook for Android installed but IMHO the interface is ugly like shit. I mean hellooo.. where’s the heart in this? In my old Xpera X1, there was a facebook app that opens to reveal floating profile pics in tiny balls, clumping together and bouncing off each other softly, slowly, sort of in a Brownian motion and almost like they belong in Avatar, you know those floating dandelions that is the life of the blue people yada yada yada – in short, it was very nice. But what sucked about that app was that it can take forever to open. Sometimes never.

So…. ugly application, fast loading time. Okay lah. Can lah.

It loads photos from my albums pretty fast too.

Alas I still prefer to use Facebook Mobile. The fonts are prettier on the android phone!

The touch site loads really fast too. The Samsung Galaxy S has a pretty awesome browser. Is it javascript when you have notifications popping up and stuff? If so, then well, the javascript thingamajig on this phone out performs any browsers that I havee ever used before. Even the Opera Mobile which I have tried on WinMo and Symbian. Meh. Doesn’t cut it for me.

And we have the Full Site! Somehow the full site disappeared from my Satio after a month or two. God knows where it went to. Even when I could somehow access it, I can’t tag people. It’s so important to tag people in photos you know! What’s the point of going mobile when you have to go home and turn your computer on just to tag some faces? Boooo.

But the browser on this one allows me to load the full site completely AND tag photos immediately. HEARTS!!

It does however freeze up when I try to tag people within wall posts or status updates. Can’t have everything. Sigh.

Zooming in at a rather comfortable magnification level with double taps.

Back to the facebook app, the profile page is quite okay! Can even upload photos immediately. Click on the camera icon to either snap a picture or upload something from the gallery.

Don’t you just love the media interface? *Drool*

As you can see from some of my pictures from within the phone, I have become quite a fan of the phone camera’s vignette function.

So let’s say we want to upload this emo shot of a rainy day, as seen through my side view mirror.

See the options you have? I am like literally spoilt with choices!! In my old phone, I forgave it for all its shortcomings because it was touted as the best cameraphone available in the market. I had to email all my photos to my facebook mobile email address or twitpic email address, but that was okay. It was fine. BUT NOW, now.. I have all these options. How can life ever be the same again!?

After choosing, say, facebook, this is the screen you’ll see immediately. Nifty huh?

Or wordpress, instant blogging! The tiny icon you see at the bottom of the ‘add’ button would be the photograph that we would be adding to your wordpress blog. I have yet to find out if I can put in more photos at a go.

And to twitter…! It generates a twitpic.com address for you. You have to select the option of either using twitpic, yfrog or tweetphoto when tweaking with your twitter application’s settings.

Now, a quick look at twitter. I was initially using Twitter for Android but since it sucks some serious balls by not having the option of replying all, I jumped onto the bandwagon which was Touiteur, which is appararently pronounced as Twitter in French. *shrugs*

The Twitter for Android application however does send notifications faster than this Touiteur and Touiteur takes quite a while to load. But it has very good features!

By clicking on a random tweet, this is what you’ll see.

You have the option of replying to everyone or be selective with your replies too.

Not quite a good example of links, but clicking on any of the twitter usernames will bring you to their profiles. If there’s a url within that particular tweet, it will appear here as an option for you to click on.

There is a bar at the top for you to drag down if you wanna tweet something or attach a photo or share a website.

Oh look I have an email! *feels popular*

YAYY.

On the second page of my homescreen, I have this thing called Feeds and Updates. I was messing about with the phone, removed the Daily Briefing thingie where there’s a weather report on my area (sungai petani – 5 years here, I should know the weather by hard now. It never changes much.) and accidentally activated this Feeds and Updates thingie. I initially thought it was the social hub thingie because my friends’ tweets and facebook updates are published in a steady stream.

I’ve still yet to figure out how to access the social hub like how it is advertised on the samsung website. By clicking on Facebook and twitter, I’m brought to the mobile versions of both my accounts.

Here’s a pre-installed application that I tend to use a lot. Since I’m too lazy to open my facebook or twitter app, the Write and Go application is really useful!

It looks like some notepad but it is more than that.

Here’s a short demo of the swype keyboard. I wanna do a video blog and a post on the swype function later!! Not yet though. Just some teaser here first.

I don’t know la, just simply typing.

Satisfied with your witty status/tweet, you hit “Update Status” and this pops up. Check those that you want updated. Convenient right?!!

Though it’s my study week but I still have to come in for a few more clinical sessions to issue a crown and a cast partial denture to two of my patients. Some of my classmates were hovering around my phone because they have seen me raving about it on facebook far too much that they decided to punish me by kidnapping my phone. They had a good time playing some puzzle game where you have to fit blocks in together to match a certain number or something. Most of the boys were very impressed with the Swype keyboard. It is seriously a breakthrough in technology! I also showed them the Google Sky application, which is really beautiful. I’ll show it here later. Need to study for two more exam components in the coming week. Sigh. So, will have to take things slow.

All right, now that I’m done raving about the integration of social media tools on the Samsung Galaxy S, here are the photos I have taken with the phone since my last review:

Vignette in Mono colour. These are decodens, which are available on The Sticker Monster (for those who are visiting for the first time, it is my blog shop where I sell stickers, bling blings and decoden. Basically scrapbooking materials and cute things girls use to decorate their phones) and I was half way packing an order for a customer and thought, “Hey, wouldn’t it make a lovely picture!” It sure as hell did!

I think this is prettier. Vignette in Warm tones.

My outdated Santa Claus decoration which glitters and swings when I take sharp corners. <3

Taken with Sush who came up to Penang to visit her family. This was in Top Shop, Gurney Plaza and apparently she is not used to seeing such big denominations as the prices in Pounds don’t look that daunting.

Back in Sungai Petani, Kedah, a meh sunset at the traffic lights.

Vignette in normal mode. That’s Brenda!

Thank god my crown is ready!! My patient would be very upset if her crown was not ready in time. Happy to report that she was very pleased with the colour of the tooth as it matched her adjacent teeth very well!

These are articulators. We use it to replicate the bite of the patient so that we can set the false teeth accurately when making dentures.

A view from the dental technology lab.

Me, in full dental regalia presenting to you an empty dental chair in our polyclinic. We have 36 bays there and patients come from all over for the free dental treatments at our dental hospital.

Cze-Yin looking so decent.

Got bored while waiting for my patient to come. This is Vignette in Mono.

You get to do some comparison. Vignette in warm mode.

It’s quite cold here in Sungai Petani these days with the constant rain. I love it when the mist envelopes the surrounding hills behind my university.

Another wet day at AIMST.

Just a random shot. Yeap, I bought a car charger for the phone.

I meant to take a picture of my dinner which was Chicken Cordon Bleu at Secret Recipe..

Artsy fartsy shot of Brenda’s arm and what’s left of her Tom Yam Kung.

Porridge at my favourite cafe near my rented house here in Kedah! Century egg porridge with bits of oysters, spring onions and chicken slices. DELISH!

Another day at the clinics. Sigh. Last day in fact. My patient’s cast partial dentures are ready. Yay.

Hurriedly flagged everyone over from all corners of the clinic to pose for this photo. For most of us, (unless the poor sod has to come in tomorrow to continue with some left over treatment, sucks to be him/her) it was our last day in the clinics, tying up loose ends. In the month before our study week, we were rushing against time to fill up our quotas and so here we are, on a Thursday, when we should be at home sleeping studying, issuing our finished bridges, crowns, cast partial dentures, acrylic partial dentures, completing the final stages of our root canal treatments etc.

Came home at 4 something to study some orthodontics before dinner and felt quite down (no reason, I think I might have bipolar disorder), out came the chocolates of hypocrisy to cheer me up:D

Testing out the so called Beauty function on the camera. It makes your skin looks softer and I think it gives a teeny weeny bit of gaussian blur to the picture. I am not being perasan about the Beauty function k. I also wish it wasn’t called beauty. I had some battering to my self esteem the day before. Anyone heard of this stupid forum called my kopitiam or summat? They took my creating fake double eyelids post and laughed at my photos. Oh well. Not like it’s the first time it has happened for that post. Some forums in other countries have expressed horror at how I ‘mutilate’ my eyelids to make them appear to be double eyelids, but it’s really not a big deal. I didn’t even bother because I thought it was in a country far far away, it won’t matter. But then when it’s somewhere closer to home, I had to do something. I’ve made that post private already… I won’t allow my reputation to be ruined in the hands of stupid shallow males who type with intentional spelling errors only to get hurt again. Especially when my concentration should be elsewhere like exams…and.. eheh, reviewing a phone…….. among other things.

If you must know, yes, I did stand up for myself by telling them that I was insulted etc. The people at the forum didn’t believe it was me. Some even asked me to fuck off. Luckily the moderator was kind enough to remove my link and my photos from that particular thread. The forum makes very mean comments regarding everything else under the sun. For some dark humour that does not involve you, I guess it makes for great entertainment.

EH WAIT. This is supposed to be a Samsung Galaxy S review!! Sorry, sorry. Back to the phone.

A picture of Lie Yuen’s dinner. Banana Leaf Set! Vegetarian somemore!

My sinful Briyani Chicken dinner set. Mmmm!

Oh and here’s a HD video treat!

A tiny tour around my dental tech lab at uni:

That’s all for the second part of my Samsung Galaxy S Maxis 10 review. More to come!
