For today’s review, I would like to show you the camera and video taking functions on the Samsung Galaxy S! Aside from that, I would also be taking you through how your photos and videos are shown on the phone. And as usual, you can either see how the functions are in my youtube review videos or just scroll down to look at all the pictures!

The Camera

The 5mp camera unfortunately does not come with flash, which is quite a downer for such a phone that has practically everything. Why are gadget makers so cruel!?! Why must they hold back on certain items?! I can’t and won’t buy another phone JUST because that new beautiful phone has a flash on it! I’m not going to fall for that marketing ploy! NEVAR!

Anyway, the maximum resolution is 2592 X 1944 pixels and best of all, the camera has touch screen autofocus. Nais. (insert facebook thumbs up)

The camera comes with Geo-tagging, face and smile detection and even has antishake!

Though the flashless situation is a bit of a downer, you have the option of changing your ISO and also the exposure which is quite unheard of for a camera phone. And no, there is no option to change the shutter speed you greedy bastard.

There’s a few shooting modes that you can use.

The self shot utilizes the front facing camera and takes really crap photos, with a maximum of 0.3mp, but good for sending that good morning photo to your boyfriend or girlfriend.

Beauty mode gives off a gaussian blur, makes the average girl (read: me) glow sweetly. I think I have mentioned this feature in a previous post.

The smile shot utilizes the smile detection technology. Works like a charm. Will show you more further down the post!

Continuous mode is your burst function, great for freezing those droplets of water. (but make sure your lighting is like sunlight or else you can’t get anything under lowlights)

Panorama…I thought it sucked while preparing the videos and photos for this post. But I took it out to town today when I had to go bang tables at the TNB headquarters for charging me RM500 for this month’s bill and… lo and behold! It takes really nice 180 degrees panorama shots! Shall upload the picture in the next review!

Oh vintage. *jizzes in pants* I love the vintage mode SO, so, so, so, much. It takes in four different modes: neutral (normal colour), warm (orangey colour), cool (bluish-greenish colour) and mono (black and white). All photos have a vignette effect to it. I’m pretty sure you’d be familiar with the vignette effect if you have been following my last few posts.

Add Me is ugly and pointless. Just randomly shoots one photo, and then you point and shoot another. It adds it together. I tried a few of myself kissing myself..etc.. but the effect is quite bleh. So you can skip that, no problem.

Action shot, I have yet to try that one out. But the maximum resolution is quite low, so skip that too.

Cartoon is quite cute! You can change almost everything to vector art! I have a bit of a cartoon mode demonstration in the video, so please layan and watch it too!

Here’s the smile detection technology I mentioned in the smile shot mode. I got a photo of myself and Chee Kiang at the Nuffnang blog awards and our smiles were actually detected! Damn cool right?!?

You then have scene modes.. which is like different hues… lightings…*insert camera jibberish*

The last two. I have yet to try these out. IMHO, even in your normal Point-n-Shoot cameras, these scenes don’t do much for your photos. I just take everything in auto or manual mode.

A little tip though. You may want to download some camera applications from the Android Market like the RetroCamera or FXCamera or something like that which is riding on the LOMO cam trend but it crashed my main camera a few times. I had to restart it a few times. So I think I am better off without those cool effects. Even if the effects are cool, the resolution is super poor. So…. yeah. Don’t bother.

The Video Camera

As we all know, and love, about the Samsung Galaxy S, is that it takes video in HIGH DEFINITION!

My damn tv doesn’t even have it yet, but my handphone already has it? Wtf?!

But it’s true. You can shoot videos in high definition (720p) and alternatively shoot in plain ol’ VGA mode which is great for your MMS videos.

But I can’t stand videos taken in VGA mode, i mean like why want to take any VIDEO at all with that kind of quality? I am always so annoyed when someone sends me some scandalous sex video and they are always, always, ALWAYS, shot in VGA mode. Can’t see nuts leh. Literally. It’s like rod…..then pixel. Like wtf!

So high definition is the way to go if you want the world to see everything.

But I am not advocating THAT okay, by everything I mean how green the grass are in the videos, how happy my boyfriend looked on his graduation day, how cute a little child is blowing bubbles from a bubble gun along Gurney Drive and all the sweet and innocent things in this world. *throws flowers and cotton candies everywhere*

La Galleria

Part 1 of viewing your media.

Part 3 of viewing your media.

All images saved in your phone can be found in the ‘gallery’ application. No matter where you save your photos on your sd card, it will be scavenged by some strange mechanism in the phone and be placed in the gallery for you.

Be it photos that you took with your camera, photos transferred from other devices via bluetooth (where can I get a bluetooth digital camera?! I long for the day~), print screens from your applications, photos saved from your computer..oh the list is endless.

A cool effect you can do with the gallery is that the albums tilt this way and that way when you move your phone about. I suppose the accelerometer is responsible for this.

You’ll see this when you click on the photo album. Oh, you can even see videos, yeah I forgot to mention that. By clicking on any individual picture, you’ll have the option to immediately upload it to any social media network you want, email it to anybody you want… I have mentioned all this in the previous post.

The Video Player

Now, the video player is a serious WIN on the Samsung Galaxy S.

The interface could be better lah.

But when the quality is nothing short of stunning, everything else just falls into place. This proved to be a good procrastination tool during my study week. *guilty*

Next, we have youtube! Compared to the youtube application on my Sony Ericsson Satio, this youtube application wins hands down because you have the option of playing it in high quality! After opting for high quality, videos are really nice and clear!

Another way to watch video is via your browser.

So, you can only watch Xiaxue’s videos via the clicknetwork site. Quite mafan to find on youtube, don’t know why. I don’t think it’s on youtube anymore, or is it? I think she’s using vimeo or something like that.

So when you click on a video, this is what you will see.

Clicking on ‘Internet’ will initiate a download. Something like what your Realplayer can do to flv files.

If you click on video player, you can stream the video! Quality looks good, doesn’t it?

The Music Player

Love..love..love..<3 I really like the music player. You know what’s the best part about this whole arrangement?

There’s a slot to insert your microSD and up to 32gb too! So, think about it. How about I slot in like 32gb worth of videos AND songs on top of the 16gbs already built into the phone? Too awesome right!! *squeals*

Didn’t manage to get the album art in. Not sure how. But here’s the list of songs I have on anyway.

*clears throat* Bathroomdiva is my syok sendiri name when I record myself singing my favourite song of the moment on Garageband. Oh right, by flipping the phone to its side, your playlist will look like that. Like a digital jukebox. The records swivel around as you choose a song.

The FM Radio, like all your FM radios on your phones would need you to plug your earphones in.

Not much photos, but you can check out the video. It is slightly more detailed. Scans all the available radio channels and lists it out for you. I thought that was pretty cool!

Aldiko eBook Reader

I’ve never had an eBook reader so this was rather new to me!

One of the reasons why I was drawn to the iPad was because I could read pdf journals with ease and also read books in a comfortable way, digitally!

You can even see the cover of the book and judge it.

The words are well sized. You can increase the fonts etc etc. About pdfs, you can download the Adobe Reader application and see your pdfs there. Very smooth, hardly laggy at all!

Ahh, we have come to the end of another review post. Sorry lah my blog is a little commercialized these days. Tahan lah k? Will write emo posts about graduating (hopefully. If cannot, will write emo posts about staying back for another year. Touch all the wood around you for me please.)

My darling boy graduated as a pharmacist from NUS! What I did was risky… but it was a very important day and I had to be there even though I had another exam to sit for on Monday. I flew back to Penang (where I parked my car, I love how convenient flying from Penang airport has become) on Sunday and was studying again by 2pm, gearing up for my second last exam.

While walking around the shopping mall near his place, saw these colourful waterbottles. So cute somemore as they are very tiny. For babies I think! This is taken with the ‘beauty mode’. See the soft glow? <3

I used to wonder if humans in the past knew that there would come a day where the one thing that they need almost as much as food, water and oxygen would be the MOBILE PHONE.

Ever felt like you lost an appendage when you forgot to bring your phone out for the day?

I know I have.

From this revelation, I had wondered what would be the next big thing that people could not possibly live without! I think facebook comes pretty close to becoming a necessity these days.

The Samsung Galaxy S integrates all my social media needs extremely well! Almost every single thing in the phone comes with an ability to share on Facebook, Twitter and any other applications that you have downloaded like WordPress, Flickr, Picasa..etc.

Do have a look at the three videos below (split up into three parts because the file was too big for lousy youtube!) for a tour of the social media tools available on the Samsung Galaxy S! At the same time you can see how fast you can switch between screens. I really love the touchscreen, it’s extremely responsive. Granted, it responds mostly to the pads of your fingers, much like the iPhone. With my Satio, I grew accustomed to using my nails to tap. Not sure how they differ, technically, but oh well. Human beings are able to adapt to any strange new conditions.

The photos below might be similar to the video but you know, there are always those of you who are too lazy to click on videos! (Shame on you! All my effort to record, delete, edit, upload..ughh)

Since I have not done much of a tour around the interface, here’s the draggable notification bar. It has the wifi, bluetooth, silent and vibration options at the touch of a button. When a new email comes in, it will appear as a tiny logo at the upper left hand corner. If it’s a facebook notification, there’ll be the facebook logo instead and if it’s a new mention from twitter, then a little bird sits at the upper corner there. Just drag the bar down to access your latest email/message! I LOVE IT!

Boo. I’m unpopular like that. T_T

Alternatively, with the always-reliable options button on the lower left hand corner of the phone, away from the SUPER AMOLED (yeap just have to say it in caps) screen would allow you to also check your notifications (same functions) and edit your apps, search for something within your phone, change your wallpaper and go straight into settings. Side track: Going into settings to tweak your phone to function the way you want it is very much hassle-free. Doesn’t induce any headaches at all!

I have Facebook for Android installed but IMHO the interface is ugly like shit. I mean hellooo.. where’s the heart in this? In my old Xpera X1, there was a facebook app that opens to reveal floating profile pics in tiny balls, clumping together and bouncing off each other softly, slowly, sort of in a Brownian motion and almost like they belong in Avatar, you know those floating dandelions that is the life of the blue people yada yada yada – in short, it was very nice. But what sucked about that app was that it can take forever to open. Sometimes never.

So…. ugly application, fast loading time. Okay lah. Can lah.

It loads photos from my albums pretty fast too.

Alas I still prefer to use Facebook Mobile. The fonts are prettier on the android phone!

The touch site loads really fast too. The Samsung Galaxy S has a pretty awesome browser. Is it javascript when you have notifications popping up and stuff? If so, then well, the javascript thingamajig on this phone out performs any browsers that I havee ever used before. Even the Opera Mobile which I have tried on WinMo and Symbian. Meh. Doesn’t cut it for me.

And we have the Full Site! Somehow the full site disappeared from my Satio after a month or two. God knows where it went to. Even when I could somehow access it, I can’t tag people. It’s so important to tag people in photos you know! What’s the point of going mobile when you have to go home and turn your computer on just to tag some faces? Boooo.

But the browser on this one allows me to load the full site completely AND tag photos immediately. HEARTS!!

It does however freeze up when I try to tag people within wall posts or status updates. Can’t have everything. Sigh.

Back to the facebook app, the profile page is quite okay! Can even upload photos immediately. Click on the camera icon to either snap a picture or upload something from the gallery.

Don’t you just love the media interface? *Drool*

As you can see from some of my pictures from within the phone, I have become quite a fan of the phone camera’s vignette function.

So let’s say we want to upload this emo shot of a rainy day, as seen through my side view mirror.

See the options you have? I am like literally spoilt with choices!! In my old phone, I forgave it for all its shortcomings because it was touted as the best cameraphone available in the market. I had to email all my photos to my facebook mobile email address or twitpic email address, but that was okay. It was fine. BUT NOW, now.. I have all these options. How can life ever be the same again!?

After choosing, say, facebook, this is the screen you’ll see immediately. Nifty huh?

Or wordpress, instant blogging! The tiny icon you see at the bottom of the ‘add’ button would be the photograph that we would be adding to your wordpress blog. I have yet to find out if I can put in more photos at a go.

And to twitter…! It generates a twitpic.com address for you. You have to select the option of either using twitpic, yfrog or tweetphoto when tweaking with your twitter application’s settings.

Now, a quick look at twitter. I was initially using Twitter for Android but since it sucks some serious balls by not having the option of replying all, I jumped onto the bandwagon which was Touiteur, which is appararently pronounced as Twitter in French. *shrugs*

The Twitter for Android application however does send notifications faster than this Touiteur and Touiteur takes quite a while to load. But it has very good features!

By clicking on a random tweet, this is what you’ll see.

You have the option of replying to everyone or be selective with your replies too.

Not quite a good example of links, but clicking on any of the twitter usernames will bring you to their profiles. If there’s a url within that particular tweet, it will appear here as an option for you to click on.

There is a bar at the top for you to drag down if you wanna tweet something or attach a photo or share a website.

Oh look I have an email! *feels popular*

YAYY.

On the second page of my homescreen, I have this thing called Feeds and Updates. I was messing about with the phone, removed the Daily Briefing thingie where there’s a weather report on my area (sungai petani – 5 years here, I should know the weather by hard now. It never changes much.) and accidentally activated this Feeds and Updates thingie. I initially thought it was the social hub thingie because my friends’ tweets and facebook updates are published in a steady stream.

I’ve still yet to figure out how to access the social hub like how it is advertised on the samsung website. By clicking on Facebook and twitter, I’m brought to the mobile versions of both my accounts.

Here’s a pre-installed application that I tend to use a lot. Since I’m too lazy to open my facebook or twitter app, the Write and Go application is really useful!

It looks like some notepad but it is more than that.

Here’s a short demo of the swype keyboard. I wanna do a video blog and a post on the swype function later!! Not yet though. Just some teaser here first.

Satisfied with your witty status/tweet, you hit “Update Status” and this pops up. Check those that you want updated. Convenient right?!!

Though it’s my study week but I still have to come in for a few more clinical sessions to issue a crown and a cast partial denture to two of my patients. Some of my classmates were hovering around my phone because they have seen me raving about it on facebook far too much that they decided to punish me by kidnapping my phone. They had a good time playing some puzzle game where you have to fit blocks in together to match a certain number or something. Most of the boys were very impressed with the Swype keyboard. It is seriously a breakthrough in technology! I also showed them the Google Sky application, which is really beautiful. I’ll show it here later. Need to study for two more exam components in the coming week. Sigh. So, will have to take things slow.

All right, now that I’m done raving about the integration of social media tools on the Samsung Galaxy S, here are the photos I have taken with the phone since my last review:

Basically scrapbooking materials and cute things girls use to decorate their phones) and  I was half way packing an order for a customer and thought, “Hey, wouldn’t it make a lovely picture!” It sure as hell did!

Thank god my crown is ready!! My patient would be very upset if her crown was not ready in time. Happy to report that she was very pleased with the colour of the tooth as it matched her adjacent teeth very well!

These are articulators. We use it to replicate the bite of the patient so that we can set the false teeth accurately when making dentures.

Another day at the clinics. Sigh. Last day in fact. My patient’s cast partial dentures are ready. Yay.

Hurriedly flagged everyone over from all corners of the clinic to pose for this photo. For most of us, (unless the poor sod has to come in tomorrow to continue with some left over treatment, sucks to be him/her) it was our last day in the clinics, tying up loose ends. In the month before our study week, we were rushing against time to fill up our quotas and so here we are, on a Thursday, when we should be at home sleeping studying, issuing our finished bridges, crowns, cast partial dentures, acrylic partial dentures, completing the final stages of our root canal treatments etc.

Came home at 4 something to study some orthodontics before dinner and felt quite down (no reason, I think I might have bipolar disorder), out came the chocolates of hypocrisy to cheer me up:D

Testing out the so called Beauty function on the camera. It makes your skin looks softer and I think it gives a teeny weeny bit of gaussian blur to the picture. I am not being perasan about the Beauty function k. I also wish it wasn’t called beauty. I had some battering to my self esteem the day before. Anyone heard of this stupid forum called my kopitiam or summat? They took my creating fake double eyelids post and laughed at my photos. Oh well. Not like it’s the first time it has happened for that post. Some forums in other countries have expressed horror at how I ‘mutilate’ my eyelids to make them appear to be double eyelids, but it’s really not a big deal. I didn’t even bother because I thought it was in a country far far away, it won’t matter. But then when it’s somewhere closer to home, I had to do something. I’ve made that post private already… I won’t allow my reputation to be ruined in the hands of stupid shallow males who type with intentional spelling errors only to get hurt again. Especially when my concentration should be elsewhere like exams…and.. eheh, reviewing a phone…….. among other things.

If you must know, yes, I did stand up for myself by telling them that I was insulted etc. The people at the forum didn’t believe it was me. Some even asked me to fuck off. Luckily the moderator was kind enough to remove my link and my photos from that particular thread. The forum makes very mean comments regarding everything else under the sun. For some dark humour that does not involve you, I guess it makes for great entertainment.

EH WAIT. This is supposed to be a Samsung Galaxy S review!! Sorry, sorry. Back to the phone.

One was when Kel Li was asking about ulcers and after giving her some *cough* expert advice *cough*, that particular question came out for my final exams the following day!!

And another one was when I saw a tweet about a bloggers’ phone review program organized by Maxis. Bloggers/twitter users were invited to send in audition videos to convince the good people at Maxis why they should be chosen to review the latest Android phone to join the Maxis family – THE SAMSUNG GALAXY S! It retails at RM2599 but if you get a contract with Maxis, you save RM900 and only pay RM1699. More details can be found here.

I was never a huge fan of Samsung. If you’re a tv, you’re a tv. Like for LG, if you’re a refrigerator, you’re a refrigerator. So when they branched out to the mobile phone market, I was a little wary.

But after spending two days with the phone, I just.can’t.seem.to.put.it.down!!!

My mum and brother (who found the office to collect the phone from, on google maps, no less) were kind enough to drive down to Damansara to get the phone for me as I am still stuck in Sungai Petani, trying to wrap up my final exams. I have 10 days in between my theory paper and my ..er.. something like a practical paper, so I pretty much have some time on my hands to explore this gorgeous Android phone thoroughly!

10 participants have been chosen and the review program will last for two weeks, so hopefully I can keep up with Maxis’ expectations and do a good job with the reviews.

The Samsung Galaxy S is packed away in a classy black box, totally befitting of its nature.

The Samsung Galaxy S as you probably know already, is running on the Android platform. The Android platform was created by Google and have been adopted by more recent smartphones. Like the HTC Desire and the Xperia 10 are both running on the android platform.

I’ve only ever used the Sony Ericsson Experia which was running on Windows Mobile (which I can’t stand. It can’t be customized to my liking AT ALL) and when I got my Sony Ericsson Satio, the symbian platform. The symbian platform is mostly associated with Nokia phones, don’t know why Sony so itchy backside go and use symbian. As a result, there were many many many applications that I could not use because it was a Sony and most Symbian apps are made for Nokia.

Using these two platforms only made me hungry for all those lovely applications that my smartphone toting friends have been raving about. “Did you know that you can play Cooking Mama on the iPhone?” “OMG my phone can detect the nearest speedtraps!!” “Let me check-in at this joint first.” Gahhh.. I wanted in on it too.

Enter the Android Market.

The android market is relatively newer than the itunes store but the list of free applications are ENDLESS. Can’t stop scrolling one.

Inside the box are the usuals – phone charger, earphones, usb cable, battery pack, manuals and warranty forms.

There’s a sticker on the front of the phone bragging about its awesome awesome features!

This was the moment when I fell in love with the Super AMOLED screen. I finally found the power button and the gorgeous screen came to life.

The photo does the phone no justice as the glow just emanated from the phone, spilling out within that small space in my dark hotel room.

One thing to really really love about the phone is how easily it downloads the internet settings for you upon insertion of the SIM card.

My experiences with my previous two smartphones made the internet settings thingie quite a hassle, to the point that I even fear resetting my phone to factory settings.

After many many research and consideration, I have decided that it would be most cost efficient to have two separate sim cards on two different phones.

I have been using the Maxis Value Plus 80 plan for a couple of years now. Using data on a normal talk plan can be very hefty. Even with the bundled data packages available, I don’t find them to be very cost worthy.

I was ecstatic when I managed to get the Maxis Broadband Package for Rm48! I already had my own USB modem, so I just took the sim card and stuck it in my smart phone. When I am away from my streamyx connection and would love to kill time with my laptop, I’ll just stick the simcard into the USB modem and voila, instant high speed internet! (as I am on broadband)

One thing I have never been sure about is if there are any differences between the speeds of both broadband and normal talk plan data speeds. My Maxis broadband can be faster than my streamyx connection at times.

ANYWAY, back to the Samsung Galaxy S.

When I stuck my maxis broadband SIM card into the phone, the settings just fell into place immediately at the click of a button. No username asked, no passwords, no need to go into the settings etc. They then prompted me to add my google account and after that I was signed in to all my google stuff!!

The back of the phone, with its 5.0mp camera and the speaker. I’ve read some reviews about how they would rather the phone have a more matt finishing than its current plasticky back but I think with it being plastic, scratches will be less. It looks rather promising in the scratch resistant department.

To the left of the phone would be the volume control which doubles as your camera ..er.. zoomer.

At the top of the phone would be the 3.5mm jack and the USB port.

I like the fact that you have to slide the entire screen down to unlock it. Locking the phone is done by pressing once on the power button.

There is a home button (too dark, cannot see, but I assure you, it’s there), a left button to change settings for applications and etc, a right button to go back, back, back.

As I have mentioned in the video, the most awesome technology to come from the Samsung Galaxy S would be the Swype keyboard. The idea is to trace the alphabets of a word that you wanna write, and tada, it appears in your message/tweet/status/email whatever that you’re writing. I’ll do another detail on the Swype function over the next few days!

The best thing about it is that it doesn’t even have to be alphabets specific. More on that later.

Just a sneak peek into one of the apps… I love it that I can customize my MSN! Ahhh! It’s almost as pink as my adium contact list.

Oh, right. Here’s a photo of the phone without the battery cover. There’s a slot to insert a microSD and the phone itself already has an internal storage space of 16gb. So that’s a whole lot to go before cranking up the old lelong.com.my or forum.lowyat.com.

*During the second week of April 2010, my faculty held their annual games which we have so aptly named ADSALympics. ADSALympics is a monster of a sporting events. I like how my junior Shing Hui put it: ADSALympics = Cheer 2000 + NBA + Olympics + Thomas CUP + FIFI World Cup + Reality Show Event (plenty of drama). I’ll probably blog more about the other events, but by now most of you should be well acquainted with my blogging style, so don’t set your hopes too high.

At the ripe old age of 23 (*dodges tomatoes and banana skins from the rest of the classmates*), I took part in my first ever cheerleading event!

We have this formation called The Bridge where Sock Nee runs across the boys’ backs. I was supposed to be an extra boy but after being all drama queen and squealing and screaming everytime Sock Nee stepped on me, they kicked me back out to join the girls shaking the pompoms. So happy to be back as a girl.

Everyone feared for Lie Yuen’s life with this formation. It was a three layer pyramid with the second layer’s boys’ hands extended all the way up, holding on to her feet. She then falls straight down from the top to the waiting hands below.

Batch 3 performed after us and gave it their all. They have been practicing for more than a month prior to the competition and with Deniece as their squad leader, they pretty much dropped all the jaws in the badminton court that day.

Gerviene as the damsel in distress during the siren call at the beginning (just watch the video!). Oh yeah, the Batch 3′s team name is Sirens (or was it Sirenz?).

The Batch 3 can seriously seriously dance. There’s one part where their tummies tuck in and their chest stick out and back in in quick succession…that was awesome. I tried that in front of the mirror and failed embarrassingly.

The last to perform were the dentistry babies, our super juniors from Year 1.

There is one particular move that I liked a lot! The girls had this puppet move where they have their arms sticking out robot style and then they turn their heads to us in puppetry fashion. Nice touch!

I must apologize though as I don’t have Batch 5′s video up on youtube and I must not procrastinate any longer with these posts so I won’t be showing Batch 5′s video here. It’s on facebook though…I think.

It was certainly a rewarding experience coming in at 2nd place after the few but intense cheerleading practice which was done military style by Maxis. This is probably the last time that I’ll ever get to be part of a cheerleading team.

In my me time, I indulge in a little syok sendiri karaoke session, if you don’t already know by now. Always fearing the day where my housemates will come and knock on my door angrily and say, “OI ENOUGHLA! YOU THINK YOU SING VERY NICE ISSIT?!!!!!”

My cover of Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now. Her voice is so husky and gorgeous and not sure if Lady Antebellum and Lady Gaga are okay with the same prefix.

My latest song obsession from Glee! Loved the cast’s version of Like A Virgin so much. Santana’s sluttiness is so refreshing. I’m always drawn to sexual innuendos, why ah?

And from about a month ago, I belted a few of my favourite Moffatt songs from my teeny bopper years!

For those who are not from my university or my course, ADSALympics is an annual sporting event held by the AIMST Dental Students’ Association. It is basically a crazy week of non stop sports, reducing us to soggy tissues at the end of it all.

On Day 1 we had the long awaited Cheerleading event followed by the Basketball game on that very same day. Swimming, Dodgeball, Ping Pong, Badminton, Futsal, Amazing Race..all within the span of one week. On Monday would be track and javelin and on Tuesday, we hope to be done with the rest of the Dodgeball matches.

I never knew one human being could do much in such a short span of time. Ask any dental student (who contributed ahem ahem ahem clears throat) and they would raise one finger with the help of the other finger, supported by raising their knees slightly for a larger force…..just to show you that they are still alive.

Body Evolution (our local massage center located at our usual dinner spots) would be filled with BDS people over the next few days. I had my full body massage there a few days ago and if any of you saw ugly red spots on my right and left arm (bilateral ugly red spots), that’s because the china masseuse talked me into getting the hot cup treatment. Don’t know what is it lah, I thought she wanted to use the cow bone on me to ‘kuat sah’ and before I knew it, my flesh was being sucked into tiny bowls. I had a very turtle moment and it hurt like a mofo bitch. That’s why it is very important to send your children to chinese schools.

SO! Here’s a summary of our cheerleading preparations over the past few weeks. All these photos were up on facebook weeks ago but privatised to only my classmates as we did not want to show any of the juniors or lecturers what we had in store for them come ADSALympics Day 1! Our hard work really paid off with all the awesome comments we have been getting. For eight days of practice, I think we did pretty good. We got second place though Maxis wanted us to be number one! We are complacent people and it was more than we could have asked for! Full coverage on the Cheerleading event will be after this post. PROMISE.

Our first ever practice was held at the jetty in our housing area, BLM. Trivia: The jetty is rumoured to be haunted after 7pm.

I was also supposed to be on one end of the bridge as an extra boy, since there weren’t enough boys in the team and the only girl who had the physique (body mass) of a guy was me, so fml. Sad flashbacks of wearing a tuxedo and twirling my classmate who was wearing a yellow dress, dancing to the song “Happy Together” at our kindergarten concert played in my head. Not enough boys back then too.

For our second cheerleading practice, Maxis found a shady area near the first guard house at uni. It was a spot that most of us did not even know existed. Another reason to give my hat off to him.

For the past few years as Lie Yuen’s sister, best friend, classmate, housemate, ex college classmate, KL kaki lang… I have always had a feeling that she used to cheerlead in high school but would always get scolded from her for getting my facts wrong. Seems that I was right all along. She does have natural cheerleading talents! Climbing up to the third layer..etc.. she can do it all lah.

Both hands have to raise at the same time so that the flyer will feel more stable.

At our third practice, we had it at Gemilang the futsal court. Maxis was taking this so seriously, he even printed out instructions for everyone. We were so proud of Maxis for taking so much initiative that we scolded each other if any of us forgot to take the paper home. LOL.

After class, we gathered to start on the pompom making process. It was a futile session as the material used was not ideal.

Long story short, most of the pompoms were done by my grandmother, mum and me as I thought it would be better that I finish the pompoms since if a few people took it back to their respective hometowns during the holidays to complete, there would not be any form of standardization. After our one week holiday, we rented a badminton court somewhere in town for our final rehearsal. It was also the first time we attempted that super dangerous three layer formation where Lie Yuen falls backwards to the waiting arms of the boys.

The banner was done creatively by Ee Chia, Nien, Chwan Horng and a few others. I loved the glittery gold paint! We have a banner that rolls down from the top of the three layer formation. You can see that in the video!

Every girl could do with a little pick me up come exam season:) This is my way of doing it!

ALSO I AM OBSESSED WITH GLEE. First time I am crushing on a guy who is one year younger than me. Even with celebrities, I couldn’t bring myself to go gaga over someone younger or even a gay personality. It’s like totally no hope, so why go there? KURT AND ARTIE ARE JUST AWESOME. I think their real names are sexier, though so common. Sorry to all the Kevins and Chrises out there! Chris Colfer looks like a character out of an Enid Blyton book. You know those school boys who bump into fairies in the woods when they go out to play and having to learn a lesson from a magical spell gone wrong.

I watched Wicked when I was in London back in September, so I was absolutely thrilled when I read that Defying Gravity was going to be on Glee. Totally loved the version on it.

Here’s my take.

And for the longest time, I have been obsessed with Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance. Jimmy and Poh Yee who are usually with me on the four hour rides home to KL will have to endure at least a few rounds of Bad Romance and me screeching along to it.

Almost everyone is a Michael Jackson fan now that the man is dead. I shall embrace my role as one of the many hypocritics before I continue with this post. My mother even bought some of his concert dvds. My MOTHER! Whose last brush with celeb fanaticism was some old guy who sang the song Patches and performed in Genting Highlands a while back. To my amusement, she even told me that our part time cleaner is also an MJ fan. That got me into stitches. My aunty cleaner who doesn’t even speak english but nags all day as she cleans our house.

And today she sent my brother out to the bookshop to buy magazines with Michael Jackson’s stories in it.

I keep telling her to learn how to use the internet, emails are supposed to be replied immediately not four months later. She’s totally missing out on a lot now that she wants to know so much about MJ and the internet is like spilling with everything that would be interesting!

Over the past two weeks, I’ve been googling and googling about all things pertaining to Michael Jackson. Of course, the stories surrounding his death are rather sensational (children not his, debts, drugs etc) but I’m not particularly intrigued by that. In fact, I find it boring. Especially the drugs. Ho-hum. What’s the big deal? Every other celeb death is assumed to be linked to it.

If you’re on my facebook, you would be bombarded by links to MJ stories and videos. So I thought it’d be a good idea to put it all up here and share it – something that I enjoy doing. When I like/get obsessed with something, all I want to do is share. Friends may remember the Moffatts obsession, the Douglas Lim craziness, Homecoming (chinese show) and maybe Lady Gaga for awhile. I try to like her.. but I only like a few songs. Welcome to the Michael Jackson mania, people. *bows*

Some people might find it annoying and I am just cowering waiting for some fierce person to ask me to stfu already. You know the type. Those who deem themselves to be anti-establishment, those who shun anything mainstream. Those who appear to be cool just because they are different.

It’s okay to embrace your own interests and I’m doing exactly that! All I can say is you guys should be grateful that I am no religious zealot, I would probably be the world’s most annoying evangelist EVAR.

Lie Yuen comes into my room less now coz she’s afraid I’ll trap her here over an hour torturing her with countless videos and photos of his children.

Because of his death, I finally bothered to listen to more of his songs and viewed his performances on youtube. I daresay that this is my first time, actually, watching Michael Jackson perform. All the while I only see him in the papers with his bizarre scandals and on tabloids. I didn’t grow up in the 80s. I still listened to nursery rhymes way into the 90s until 1998, when the boyband fever engulfed all little girls in that era. I thought the video to You Rock My World in 2002 was uber boring. I still do. But I love that song! But I loved Sophie Ellis Beaxtor, Shakira and Mariah Carey more at that time. How was I to appreciate the magic of Michael Jackson if I was not exposed to it enough? Advertisements in 1996 of his HIStory tour just didn’t cut it for me, neither did his face on my pepsi water tumbler which I carried during recess times under my armpits as a no nonsense school prefect.

So seeing him perform in the late 80s to early 90s.. I’m. blown. away. How can those legs move like that? Those crazy spins! Won’t his toes break?!

Scream more, Michael! Scream more! Oh how I love to hear him hoot and howl. I can’t copy any of that without sounding like a sick dog.

I’m sure every fan would have a favourite Michael era. For all his flak about the skin bleaching and the plastic surgery, I actually think that he benefited A LOT from a certain amount of plastic surgery. I like him best from Thriller to the times he appeared on stage for his HIStory tour.. that man is SMOKING HOT. A little black eyeliner is actually a good idea on male celebrities, not normal people. PLEASE. Think Adam Lambert. Thought he was a poofy wannabe from the pictures in the papers but saw him on youtube, quite delicious. So yeah, John Travolta style chin clefts don’t really cut it for me. He really should have stopped there, in the early 1990s.

Then I sit back and think, damn. This man is only one year younger than my father. Even my mother is a couple of years younger than Michael Jackson. Can’t imagine Michael Jackson nagging me to clean my room and not to come home so late. But I sure as hell am salivating over his svelte bod circa Black or White. Which is very wrong again.

Before I launch into the torrent of links and videos, let me wax lyrical a little about some of my favourite MJ songs.

The Girl Is MIne – a duet with Paul McCartney.

A lot of people have said they forgive Michael for a poor collaboration but I thought this was one of the nicest songs ever! The dragged out tunes, well controlled vocals and harmony.. I could listen to it a hundred times and not get sick of it. Maybe I’ll get sick of it at 105 but it’s still a really really really nice song. So easy to listen, so cute. I especially like the part where the instruments end on a little cliff hanger sort and MJ goes, “Don’t waste your time…~”. I twittered about how Paul McCartney really sounds like the Beatles in this song. Which is stupid, coz he is part of the Beatles. But you know, it’s different when you take him out of the comfort zone. It’s a nice touch.

Scream – a duet with Janet Jackson.

LOL Why do I love his duets so much? His screams here are so goddamn sexxxxyyyy. ARGGGggggghHhhhh. Sort of like a surround sound effect that goes from the left speaker to the right. Instead of the ‘hee-hees!’ that he is famous for, he gives a sort of hoot. Very different from his usual style. The lyrics are just so in your face. They say that the HIStory album is very auobiographical, chronicling his child molestation accusations and the effect that the media had on him.

The music video – most expensive ever at 7million bucks given the technology utilized for the video in 1995 – is quite entertaining too though he looks very feminine here. Some men can pull off the feminine look very well. But please, my call to society, don’t attempt if you’re straight as a rod. Straight guys look hot as they are. Gay men are hot in the sense that they make girls weep because they are off limits. But drag-like..not a good idea if you still wanna pick up the ladies.

Janet’s really ..um.. spunky (sounds like a 90s word) in this. So full of charisma with that fierce factor going on. Very angry and very raw. I likee. And you get to hear the siblings say Fuck too in this video! Read somewhere that Michael Jackson NEVER curses. If Michael never died, I would have continued to be a bigger Janet Jackson fan. I still have Someone To Call My Lover on loop.

Beat It

Probably my favourite for his group dance moves. Weird part was the mouth breathing part at the pool table. I like the tune to “No one wants to be defeated.” I always find myself drawn to lyrics that are pronounced poorly. In the song it sounds like, “no-en wants oo- bee- defea-eh..”. Couldn’t wrap my head around the lyrics for the longest time before I managed to google it.
Oh and those hips swinging in sync with them finger snaps. Good lord. Tried it in front of the mirror, ended up a fool.

Billie Jean

I like his shouty songs and this is one of it! Furthermore, this is intermingled with his ballad voice. Overplayed everywhere, my ipod included, but this is where the world was first introduced to the moonwalk. And did I mention those crazy legs? Ultimate crazy legs in this one!

He initially wanted Barbara Streisand or Whitney Houston to do the female vocals but they had obligations and so he ended up doing it with Siddah Garrett, the lady who wrote his song Man In The Mirror. This is a beautiful ballad. Every song that I like and am drawn to is due to the uniqueness of the tune. A little something that sets it apart from other melodies. And this song’s defining moment is the part where they duet, “I just can’t stop.. *beautiful pause*.. loving you.”

Thriller

Yes, yes. Overplayed. I first heard it in 13 Going on 30. I loved that movie so much, cried to it more than a few times. LOL. Made me have more faith in the everlasting love of childhood sweethearts. Does high school sweetheart count? After watching Jennifer Garner perform the thriller dance with Mark Ruffalo, I was like, “What is this awesome song?” This was before Youtube was famous. The year was 2004 and I only had Ares.

Why I love Thriller? The opening line is good, “It’s close to miiiiiidnight.. *ah*”. But the unique part of this song for me is “No ghoul would ever dare try”. Of all my years of listening to this song, I never bothered to look up the lyrics. I’m always like, “Wha? What does no goo goo wud ever dare whyy means?” Though parents always put emphasis on pronunciations, but artists need to mispronounce to sell a song.

I also loved watching the making of Thriller! The make-up process is awesome… as best as they could possibly do in the early 80s. Michael’s smile was the most beautiful during those years. There’s also the rehearsal scenes where the zombies are in leotards .. as normal people.. and with Michael leading the group they practiced and practiced. I thought that was pretty interesting. And also the purple Mickey Mouse sweater he wore when rehearsing his scenes with Ola, the girl who played his girlfriend. Among the many funny comments for that video there was one that said, “WORK THAT SWEATER!!!” He was very childlike in these videos. Running around like a monkey and all. Oh and I also thought that it was super cute that the director, John Landis, would call out to the zombie, “OKAY KEVIN, COME ON OUT!” and the coffin would slide open and the ghastly dancer would emerge.

We Are The World

I know. Another overplayed song, but gosh. If you listen to him doing the recording in this video, it’s really really really breathtaking. Without the added parts of the other celebs, just Michael on his own. The melody sticks in your head, in Michael Jackson’s voice. Not the poorly harmonized versions my school mates, year after year, have butchered to nothingness but a memory of a bunch of Malaysian school kids performing for charity.

As my classmate Narjit commented on the facebook link, his smile is so beautiful here. Unique point is “We are the ones who make a brighter day so let’s start giving”. There’s just a certain bounce to this part of the melody.

Human Nature

I’ve never heard of this song before till after his death. I can’t find the video now, but it was one of the announcements of his death made by a big broadcasting network. The camera was sweeping over Times Square where LED displays were announcing his death and the chorus, “Why, why, tell them that is human nature” was playing in the background. The song itself has always been slightly haunting with the echo-ey effects. Plus the meaning of the lyrics and the way it sounded and the purpose of the video announcing his death, was really very creepy. And I loved it!

Unique point is the chorus, no doubt and also the part before the first chorus: “If this town is just an apple, then let me take a bite.”

Black or White

First of all, the intro was unnecessary. Yes, Macaulay Culkin is cute and all that, but I wish it was cut out because it would take me a long time to get to my favourite part which is when he would sing, “I took my baby on a saturday bang.” That would be the unique part of the song. Then he had to spoil it by inviting some rapper on board. The screaming part, is okay… but I wish the softer parts of the song could have gone on longer.

By the way, does anyone know what a Saturday Bang means? Couldn’t find any lyric deciphering websites for answers.

Because of all the obstacles I had to face to get to my fav parts, I just listen to Adam Lambert doing Black or White for my fix.

I’ve always loved this song. Even before he died. One of the most overplayed songs on my ipod. It’s one of those songs that I can really belt out in the toilet, ahem. Much to my neighbours chagrin. So much soul, so much pain! I had tears in my eyes when I read that he dedicated it to a boy dying of cancer. The tears disappeared when I learned that it was originally for a rat. -_- Beautiful song, none the less.

You Rock MY World

Chris Tucker spoiled the song!! Why was he asked on board to retardadize the intro?! If you watch the video, you’d notice that there’s always a pattern to his music videos. He is particularly taken to gangs and mafias. Like Beat It, Dangerous, this was no different. He could have done better though. Not enough dancing in this one, not enough shamones, not enough howls and hoots. It’s pretty clear that I truly adored the michael of the 90s. But I loved the song! Favourite part would be the beginning: “Oh.. My life..will never be the same….”

Childhood

He mentioned in an interview that it is one of his most autobiographical songs ever. A little too direct for my liking but I lingered on because of my love for disney songs. Yes, it sounds very much like something Aladdin would sing while staring at the moon. But I’m also pretty intrigued by it because in an article (one of the better articles) I read, the journalist was taken on a tour of Neverland ranch by his best friend Elizabeth Taylor. He mentioned that he saw the carousel in the themepark going round and round with nary a soul on board, and the song “Childhood” echoes through the lonely park. A cartoon of two quacking characters were projected onto a screen, no one watching. Freaky shit.

The video is quite haunting too but it really underlines his fondness for Peter Pan. There are even those floating boats that the lost boys sat in in their journey back home.

Other notables are Strangers In Moscow and Dangerous. Dangerous was only interesting because of the super synchronized dance moves and the chorus which was done in the form of choral speaking by grown men.

For those who have not bothered or done enough of MJ-stalking, you might like to see the infamous documentary “Living With Michael Jackson”. It was said that MJ was ruined after the bastard Martin Bashir won his trust and twisted everything he said.

I don’t know which part it was but there’s a scene where MJ talks about Bubbles, his pet chimp. I don’t know which was cuter. The seriousness on MJ’s face or the fact that his chimp used his toilet, eats with his fork and spoon coz he’s really polite! He could even do the moonwalk too! Bubbles is so cute, Brenda wants to buy one too when she has money. LOL. Poor Bubbles is now in a sanctuary with other abandoned chimpanzees and orang utans. He has a best friend called Sam and he is really sweet to the infant chimps there. He would stand one side when he hears them coming to the fountain. Apparently he was not told of Michael’s death.

Alright, done watching the two documentaries? Okay, now watch the spoof. Rowan Atkinson looks EXACTLY like Bashir!

This was particularly interesting as it had Macaulay Culkin in it. At this point, I have not read up on all those child molestation allegations made against him. Plenty around the web if you do a bit of searching. Most recent thing to surface would be a video of him being interrogated by a bunch of lawyers.

This was particularly sad. The dancers all looked so hopeful.

Another aspect of MJ that everyone can’t seem to get enough of (me, me especially me!) and that is of him as a father:

This one is an account by the paparazzo who snapped that extremely lucrative photo of MJ’s final moments. Sounds disgusting right? But the paparazzo had a good heart. Read on. You’ll also see how extremely generous and nice MJ was to his fans. It’s almost unbelievable. He was even pals with this paparazzi guy.

If you’re like me, particularly fascinated by the children that he raised, you might like looking at these pics from the memorial. Blanket is sooooo cute! I don’t know why people are making such a big deal if those are kids or not. He was the one who loved them and clothed them. But if anything, Blanket is 100% MJ’s son. The resemblance is very obvious. I want a Blanket too. Where can I get one?

So yeah! I decided to spend Vday with Chee Kiang this year.

The thing is, he wouldn’t know until about 5 hours before Valentine’s Day.

The 13th was supposed to be a long day for him, with a test in the afternoon after an entire night of cramming and his evening was spent at Media Corp recording for a radio show (my boyfriend’s a DJ! More on this in another post!) for this radio channel called Lush Fm and then his day would end with dinner at Fish n Co with Jon, Karthik and Yen.

A Malacca trip was ‘planned’ for him and the ‘plan’ was to leave at 7am the next day, so his stomach was set to Durian Cendol mode. Poor thing. He first told me about his Malacca trip when he came over to help me peel vegetables for my CNY reunion dinner. I immediately texted Jon and begged him to change the dates as I wanted to surprise him for Valentine’s Day! I  know I’m not creative at all… he pulled this one on me too for my 21st birthday! But I still think it’s fun.

Jon said, “It’s so that he would keep his weekend free for you!” What geniuses!! I was so grateful!

I told Leong Hui, Jon and Chun Leen about my plans and had meant to tell more people, but procrastinated and they did more of the planning for me. I’m so lucky!

The funniest thing was when Chun Leen texted me with such urgency, “Jolene, we have a situation. Call me. ” Panicking, I called him, fearing the worst.

He was all, “We’re going to Malacca the weekend that you’re here.” Haih, so kancheong~! Poor guy was not briefed about their master plan.

As for me, my journey started on the 12th of February! After my morning patient, I immediately hopped onto a bus and made my way down to KL and upon reaching Pudu at sunset, I joined the sweaty masses jostling and tumbling in the LRT and the KTM all the way back to Subang. As I wasn’t sure if my parents fully approved of my tiny adventure, I decided to be the independent daughter (as opposed to my usual troublesome daughter role) and saved them the traffic jam stress along the Federal.

Gotta love my iPod nano. Also, after watching Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist during my bus ride, I felt COOL listening to songs on my iPod while walking through the city. Don’t ask me why, I also don’t know why I’m pretentious like that.

Went home, offered to wash the dishes, talked tons about the latest going ons back at dental school to distract my dad from asking and then nagging me about my spontaneous trip, I made it through the night without much fanfare.

The next morning at 9am, mum dropped me off at Pyramid where I boarded the Aeroline and summoned enough courage to plop my butt down onto the plushy plushy OHH so plushy lounge area, where there were three other guys already making themselves at home. Kept looking up at this middle aged high ranking malay uncle who kept shouting into his phone, “Miss Lai?? Can I speak to Miss Lai???” Was quite distracted by that.

Decided to be cool again (sigh) and brought out my laptop from my bag. Thought about whether it would be embarrassing or fun to be seen with my super blinged pink laptop in a tiny area filled with men but decided to be proud of the person that I am and watched an episode of Gem of Life before I curled up in a ball and fell asleep.

Woke up and saw that my tube had rode a quarter way down and my green bra was showing, so thought it would be best that I move away from there before I humiliate myself further.

Was really proud that I managed to sleep right through the entire journey! When I opened my eyes, I had already arrive at the immigration!

Since I had a few hours to kill before the big surprise, I had lunch at Vivocity and freshened up at the toilet there.

1) Lunch was a bowl of Loh Mee and it SUCKS. I would go hungry and die in Singapore if my salary is only sufficient for hawker food. Western food in Singapore is so damn good though. Let me tell you about Esther’s Singapore hawker food experience. She was alarmed when the Wantan Mee uncle started pouring tomato sauce into her Wantan Mee. I’ve been to Singapore so many times and only rarely, VERY rarely, can I finish a bowl of noodles/plate of something from a hawker stall. Most of the time I couldn’t go through with it. The food there just tastes different, somehow. I remember staring in horror at the clear Bak Kut Teh soup as I was walking pass some hawker stalls. Bak Kut Teh soup is supposed to be brown!!

But to be politically correct, Chee Kiang has done his part and brought me to places which can satiate my salty malaysian tastebuds, such as this awesome Chicken Rice Stall at a place called Ginza and the one and only Prata Shop that all NUS students throng, making that mamak fella a millionaire (really, came out in the papers and all that), with my fav mutton nasi briyani that is not so much my fav anymore since the spiciness has gone up a few notches. *fans tongue*

2) The toilets are clean enough for me to pee sitting down, place my backpack on the floor and do my make up at the same time. Yes, I can pee standing up. *cue to clap

After cleverly boarding Bus No. 30 to NUS from Vivo, I made my way up to Jon’s room where I got ready and then later all of us went into the city, ready for the surprise!

Jon and Karthik waited inside Fish n Co for Chee Kiang while Yen and I walked around a mall nearby. Possibly the most boring mall ever. It only sells furnitures and art paintings. We had to wait for like an hour and almost died from boredom and hunger. Thanks Yen for being so nice to accompany me.

When Chee Kiang finally arrived, Jon smsed us to make our grand entrance. The restaurant was packed to the brim with people!

Yen sat down first and from outside the restaurant, I could see Chee Kiang’s hand moving about in frustration, complementing an angsty rant about his day. I snaked around the tables and tried my best to stay out of sight till the last minute.

I then snuck up on him and waved.

This was after an entire day’s worth of text messages about how I would be in Penang at night, dining with my classmates or maybe shopping.

He just looked at me, stunned! LOL. After staring at me for a long time he then stood up and said, “WHY?! HOW?!”. Haha..and he hugged me ever so tightly. It made the entire thing really worth the effort!

Anyway, I took a video to re-enact the scene since Jon’s camera’s battery died. Sigh.

The first part of the video was of me trying to get Chee Kiang to do his ‘stunned’ face. Which is also his tulan face when waiters serve him poorly. In the second video, I painfully record myself talking about the entire thing. Gah. And I have eyeshadow on so that I don’t look too haggard in the video. :X

It was quite warm where we were which totally defeated the purpose of a bar, but we managed to find somewhere else to sit which was less of an oven. The walls were too warm to lean against as right behind it was the aircon’s compressor.

I must remind myself to never be experimental – Cucumber martini. Ughh.

For over a week, Chee Kiang has been gushing about the awesome additions to the balcony he shares with his floor mates on the 6th floor of his block at Sheares Hall. A senior donated a tub to them and they’ve been having tub sessions for many days now. Chee Kiang said that they would all get into their swimming togs and sit in the tub and eat longan.

His floormates had asked him if I would be coming down for Valentine’s Day and if so, they offered butler services and they would serve the two of us as we soaked. Their charges are more expensive on Valentine’s Day too, apparently. Super wtf.

Each block was allocated SGD2000 and they got themself some tables, chairs and even a little koi pond.

Enjoying life.

This is their ‘fish spa’. They bought a lot of baby carps and started freaking out when they increased in size after a couple of weeks. LOL. What with the tiny pond.

Fish spa.. -_- Chee Kiang was telling me that they placed a few unfortunate carps inside the tub to act as fishes for their fish spa and the poor fishes didn’t make it.

Remember the Rag event which Chee Kiang took part in 2007? The one with the awesome float? As times are bad, companies have refused to sponsor scrap materials and hence they’ve taken to collecting empty cans to build their float. This is going to take a loooong time.

HAHAHAHA damn stupid.

And for the first time ever, I flew all by myself! I know it’s no big deal, but to me it is. Furthermore, I paid for the ticket with my own money. It’s not much but it’s something! Gotta love AirAsia for finally collaborating with Maybank2u, best move ever!

And here I am, flying into Penang.

It’s a little hard to believe that I saved myself 10 hours on the bus. Flying is so convenient.. sorry I’m quite jakun.

Despite coming back to Sungai Petani to crash before lunch until dinner time, I’m still deprived of sleep. Shall turn in now. I’m really glad I did this. It was convenient, it was fun and it made me happy that he was happy.

After months of anticipation, the dental dinner came and went two Saturdays ago.  Our theme for the night was Glitter.Glam. Glow. Aside from the official preparation, all of us clamoured to equip ourselves with glittery accessories, make-up and the works.

The dinner was held at G Hotel, a refreshing change from the boring hotels available at Sungai Petani. We did it last year at Cinta Sayang(probably the best the small town has to offer), and I hope the future committees of the AIMST Bachelor of Dental Surgery undergrads will only go higher and better from here. The cocktail area is quite impressive, don’t you think?

Having not seen the ballroom before but only heard about it via Ei Leng who kept telling us about her deco ideas during the meetings (complete with powerpoint presentations etc), my expectations of the place were far too high. While it snugly fits the 200-strong dinner party, I have to say I expected higher ceilings and a bigger stage!

We had Sensodyne bags from the Northern Region Malaysian Dental Association’s conference last year and they make really good bags to carry our swimming stuff in.

We spent about RM400 on rented lights but turns out that the hotel already has their own lights.

Not too shabby eh? I made the glittery envelopes and printed out the ‘certs’ for the Glam King and Glitter Queen title of the night.

The RM36 tiara was bought from Hot Market, a dodgy place which sells all kinds of knick-knacks. Surprisingly, some treasures can be found amidst the cheapo junk. There are some pretty bling bling brooches that Lie Yuen and I are quite interetsed in.

Nien looked really beautiful that night. Her dress was altered to perfection and it was flattering from ever possible angle. Her hair was wind swept and glamorous. Ah Thong, like almost all the guys in my class, looked really smart that night.

Cze-Yin’s dress, as we kept describing to whoever who asked, was like a night sky filled with stars. Better savour this moment, it’s one of the very rare occasions where you will see her in a dress. As for Zhu Zen, her gold crinkled dress looked absolutely elegant with a brown satin sash. Since she’s so fair, the colours really suited her.

The event officially started with the belly dancers doing their thang on stage.

The crowd was of a pretty good size, no complains there. Next year’s will be massive with the fifth batch soming in! And us old folks enjoying ourselves for the very last time before we graduate.

The food sucked. Enough said. The management at G Hotel did not follow our orders properly and actually served BEEF! Can you believe that?? We had Hindhus among our guests!

It was then followed by an Indian dance by some of the Year3s.

This was when we were filming the first scene for our “Dentistry for Dummies” video. It was a video by our class and almost the entire class acted in it!
